View Full Version : Gunsite low mount thumb safety

So my thumbs are short and stumpy and when I hold my 1911s the slide will slice into the lower part of my thumb near the web of my hand.... my question is if the Gunsite low mount thumb safety will allow my thumb to sit lower so as not to be cut while utilizing the 'thumbs forward grip'?

Hi
I'd forget about getting your thumb on top of the safety ...

;).... thanks Pa but that was not the advice that I was thinking of..... I like the thumbs forward grip and it does not bother me that much, I was just thinking that by having the slide rub against my thumb that it would be interfering with the slide....

Hi
A high cut ridge in a grip is another way to effectively position your hand thumb high.
I'm not a big fan of extended safeties or slide stops .....

novak, yes it should allow your thumb to sit lower, and not touch the slide.

I agree with wichaka. I had one on one of my guns, and it does just that. If I were you, I'd give it a try. But it's not guaranteed to suit you.
Funny thing is, I have short thumbs as well. I'm also a firm believe in having my thumb ride the safety at all times. That's how I've been trained.
But I've learned to stretch my strong hand thumb easily onto the safety and prefer that to the Gunsite low rise. With a regular safety, my support hand thumb fits in under the strong hand thumb better and higher.
But that's me and you're you. I think that this is probably something you just have to try for yourself, and it very well accomplish what you want. I've known other folks who prefer the Gunsite low rise.

I tried a Gunsite low-rise when I got one in a box of stuff. You'll get your thumb on it much easier, but it didn't fit any of my quality boned leather holsters.

thanks for the info.... I am just about to try my first detail strip on my DW CBOB.... Does the safety need to be fitted or can I just replace the STI safety when putting the gun back together?

Hi
Always best to assume that any safety needs to be fit.

I guess I will need to have a local smith fit it....

Hi
They are not all that hard to fit. It's just a bit of file work.
The main thing I would want to be *sure* of is that the right side "arm" doesn't drag on the frame. You will get some nasty scratches if it does.
