Slide over-hang?

Not sure if it has a name or not, but I've always wondered what causes the slide to overhang the frame a bit? You see it from time to time on well-used 1911's. The rear of the frame rails are exposed and the slide sits slightly forward on them...???

Hi

The position of the slide on the frame is determined by where the barrel locks up and how the lower lugs contact the frame. Depending on tolerances and wear the slide can be a little off.
