Don't have time to do an extensive search so maybe someone can give be some choices to try. I need some thin grips. I can't reach my mag release and can't find a extended release that'll work in my RIA. I have small hands and my right thumb has been broken many times and it doesn't extend all the way anymore. (Baseball, Football, Calf Roping ect.)

Excellent grain, fit, finish and checkering are flawless

I have bought regular and thin grips from woodgrips.com - excellent product.

Don't forget that you will need to replace the bushings also. You can also buy
the bushings from these folks.

Think I'm going to contour my stock RIA wood grips and see what happens.

Brownells has Altamont SlimTech Grips for $45.83 as well as other slim grips. I have several pair of the SlimTechs on my 1911's and they are great grips! http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/catsearch.aspx?k=1911%20slim%

Just changing to thin grips may not be the answer to reaching the mag release. I have 4 Kimber Ultra's with thin Alumagrips on all and because of an old age deformity in my right thumb I still have to swivel the pistol inboard toward the left to reach the mag release. Find a company that will let you return the grips if they don't work for you and try them out. That's the only way you will know for sure. Good luck!!

true that, 41

LoneRider, have you removed the grips and tried to reach the mag button with a bare frame?
That will give you "some" indication whether thin grips will help cure the ills

Esmeralda offers thin grips which are beautiful. Forum sponsor VZ Grips has nice synthetic options. I use thin 320s from VZ personally.

Hi

Remember that for thin grips you are also going to need thin bushings ....

+1 on Esmeralda. I got a set of regular grips and the quality is excellent. What you pick on her site is what you actually get. You can also get the bushings and screws from her when you pick out the grips.

Hi

While you are waiting for the grips, spend the couple bucks and get a proper nut driver for taking the bushings on and off. Brownells sells one.

Well, I think I've solved my problem :appld:
Got the ole' 1" belt sander out and went to work. Contoured the grips to fit my hand and now I can reach the release just fine! I had some fine looking stag grips on it but they were WAY too thick :( Looked great but!!! So, took the stock RIA grips, sanded them, dyed them with some burgandy leather dye and polished them and they work fine.

Needs a little more taken off the left side and they will be perfect!

Hi

You can *carefully* attack the screw heads with the belt sander to thin them down a little. Cold blue on them will get them back to the "right" color once you are done.

I love the gator grips from VZ. I ordered a couple more of the thin ones. All my carry guns will have these. The thin size give a great feel on a single stack gun.
The full size has the standard size gators and the ultra has the thin ones. I may switch to the thin ones at some point in the very near future...

Try using your left thumb on the slide lock.

Just my opinion - Thin grips will reduce thickness by around 40% +/- on both panels, that makes the 1911 to small for my large hands. Mag Release Access Dish would keep the desired grip size for me, plus give me easy access to the button.

Kim Ahrends offers another solution that may work as good or better then thin grips, the left panel is 'dished' for easy operation of the mag release button. Not only are his grips as good as I have seen for the money, this option is only a $10 option on his 'standard grip' price of $50 - To give you an idea of quality, I sat a set of $145 Spegel next to a set I just ordered from Kim for $60 - they look like they were cut from the same piece of Cocobolo, I was shocked, they really are that good!!

This option is available only on the Combat Checkered and Smooth grips. This option is not available on Ebony, Walnut and Laminated Stocks.

I use VZ Grips Ultra Slim 320's and I really like them. They are smoother than teh cocobola wood that came on my Kimber CDP, which makes concealment much more comfortable. They have them in the more abrasive gator as well.

Customer service is top notch with VZ with my transactions so far.

I like Smith and Alexander slim grips and contoured grips. These are really nice folks to buy from and they have no problem with returns, if you want to try something different. Check out their website, www.smithandalexander.com and don't forget to pick up appropriate bushings and a driver. Their prices are great too. $17-$45 for the grips. $10 for screws and bushings and $7 for a driver.

Forgot to mention that SA also has a light spring for mag release for $1.50
