I was reading about other pistols to just see what else there is and I came across the betetta m9. And I read that with the thumb saftey ON u can push the hammer down w/o having to pull the trigger. Now I do not have my colt 1991 yet but is that feature on these as well? or would I need some aftermarket part to do so, or some serious gunsmith work?

The thumb safety on a 1911 locks the hammer back. If it did not, one would not have a safety that functions.

Cylinder & Slide sells a conversion called the SFS (Safety Fast Shooting) that does what you describe. As far as I know, that's the ONLY way to make a 1911 do that.
Along with its advantages, the SFS conversion has a disadvantage. Most 1911 holsters with retention straps (thumb breaks) are configured for the strap to fit snugly across the back of the slide with the hammer cocked & locked. The strps won't snap with the hammer down, so using the SFS system could mean narrowing your choice of holsters.

Good information Hawk! I heard that they discontinued the SFS System. However Cylinder and Slide does have them on Close Out Sale! @ $176.95
