I have seen pictures of and officer 1911 with the bottom edge of the MSH rounded off. Is this a part I can buy or is it a modification that has to be done by a gunsmith? I like my new kimber compact stainless, but the point of the grip pokes me in my hand making it uncomfortable.

ok, I have found out that this is a permanent modification to your gun. It involves rounding the corner of the frame and msh.

has anyone done this to their own gun? Can you tell me how to do it so I wont mess things up? Am i better off sending it to a pro?

There is a photo I posted in the Gunsmithing forum of one I'm working on. Thread is Officers frame-Commander slide. I used a bobtail mainspring housing from Ed Brown. It fits the officer frame. Just cut or file the frame close to the housing, cut the bottom of the bobtail housing even with the bottom of the grip, and blend in. Just take your time and everything will fall into place. Only drawback is that you will have a small gap between the housing and mag well, but a touch of welding will fix this if it bothers you. I still have a little to do on that one. I don't like that corner of the grip in my palm either.

I just took the pistol (with the MSH installed) and put it on a grinder. Came out perfect.

Done with grinder, then files, then beadblasted. It's my Colt CCO - officer frame/commander slide.

One thing - if your officer model has a plastic mainspring housing you might want to change it out for a steel one before proceeding. I really don't know if that Colt plastic will melt when worked by machine.
