Hi

There's a better chance of going from .40 to .38 than from .45 to .38. Remember that there is never anything as simple as just swapping a barrel with a 1911. I have never seen what Kimber does in a .40 so I'm not the guy to go to for the exact details.

Best bet is to call Kimber and ask them that question. The custom shop might even be able to help you do the work.

The breechface is different size. while it might work reliability will be touch and go

Hi

A little work with a TIG welder and some machine work should take care of that. :D

You will also need a magazine. The .38 Super is a full length cartridge, while the .40 is not. The .40 magazine will have a spacer in it.

The breech face dimension will be sloppy, as others have noted. Also, the ejector may have to be replaced, or cut back.

I have fired many 9mms out of my Colt Delta Elite with only a barrel, spring, and magazine change. I would not recommend this setup for anything but range use, but I have had no malfunctions so far. Which is a whole lot better than I can say about some of my other projects!

A 10mm conversion would be cheaper and simpler. Mag, barrel, and recoil spring or a chamber reamer, mag, barrel, and recoil spring. With 38 super or 10mm, there is no ammunition at Wal-Mart. The 10mm blows the doors off the 38 super for stopping power.

Hi

One could also stick with buying a pistol in 45 acp and pass up buying the 40 that's sitting in the shop.

Hi

RIA sells a Super 38. They are fairly common at the gun shows here.
