I got a quick question (albeit probably stupid) - I loaded a bullet in the chamber with no magazine in the gun - I fired and the cartridge would not eject - is this normal for this to happen - it was the green box remington bullets - gun was Gold Cup Trophy- the slide stopped at the disassembly notch - thanks for any help

I heard this before and not sure of the explanation I was given. Probably wait for a much more experienced 1911 'guru' to get in but here's mine.
Not loading via mag. doesn't allow the rd to get up under the extractor as the rd chambers. Thus, the extractor can't 'pull' the spent shell out of the barrel. I would say disassembly slide, push out the shell with a wooden dowel, and inspect the extractor for any damage (bent end).

If the round is chambered, it has to be under the extractor. The magazine doesn't have anything to do with it.
Thus, the extractor can't 'pull' the spent shell out of the barrel.
He described a failure to eject...not a failure to extract.
The failure to eject occurred because the extracted cartridge slipped downward on the breechface as it was extracted, and either rode under the ejector or wasn't subjected to a solid hit from the ejector, and simply rolled sideways in the port and got caught by the slide on the return.
The extractor is at fault. Either insufficient tension...clocking...or bad extractor geometry that doesn't allow the tensioning wall to contact the case rim.

If you load a round without a magazine, the extractor won't pop over the case rim. It can't pull it backwards if it's behind it.
Operator error. If you do this a lot, you can actually break the extractor.

It also won't fire.
