View Full Version : Questions on adding weld to grip safety

The cosmetic problem- wilson drop in GS has a large gap at safety and tang.

I thought about building up the area on the grip safety and fitting it to the frame for a cleaner look. Has anyone done this before and can give any advise?

Is there a certain weld material to use if i want to blue the grip safety ?

Thanks

What kind of gun are you trying to fit it to?

Sistema , the gap measures out to be around 0.065 . BTW the safety has been fitted and working fine, more than likely the Sistema's tanges are short.

If you really want to do a lot of fitting to a beavertail, rather than cut the frame, the Wilson commander beavertail has a lot more material on it than the GM model, and you could dispense with the welding and get your good fit by removing the excess.

I am no welder by any means but unless you can find the same metal as the one used for the safety, your weld will probably blue differently than the rest of the safety.

The Wilson drop in grip safety is not meant to give the hairline gap that you get with a fitted safety. Wilson's gunsmith fitted safety requires a .220 radius cut on the frame tangs. I prefer the Ed Brown safety which uses a .250 cut and a cheaper cutting fixture as well.

The Wilson fitted grip safetys have a compound radius shape. It varies from 0.220" to 0.250". Springfield and Caspian and of course Wilson use this shape. It does require fitting though (DAMKIKT) to install one on a factory (SA or Caspian) beavertail frame.

Rick B ......... nailed it .............. get the Commander size Wilson drop-in if you have short tangs. It will fit very tightly .......you may have to trim the beaver tail a little.

I had made this mistake in the past .......switching to the Commander size worked wonders.

I'm curious...will the Wilson commander BTGS work on a Government frame also?

That's a roger ........... the Commander Pistol is the same size frame, just a shorter Slide than the Gov't.

Thanks for the info RickB .I compared the two on the Wilson web site and it looks like plenty of material to get the fit im looking for.

Can i assume that other GS that are not drop in can be fitted to work ?

You should be able to fit just about any grip safety to your gun, by filing and blending, but if you don't want to mess with the frame or refinishing it, then modifying a drop-in will get you there.
