View Full Version : Wear question - abnormal?

First I am a novice with the 1911 and this is only the second one I have had apart, and not even quite sure how to get it together again. But thats not the question I have at this time.

I bought a used SA Champion and when I removed the slide to clean and lube I noticed a shiney spot. Is this normal? Do I need to have something fixed or adjusted?

TIA

It depends on what part is touching the frame. If it's the firing pin stop it just needs to be slightly modified so it stops doing that, if it's the slide then I don't know as there's much that can be done. If it turns out to be the slide maybe a call to SA customer service get their opinion.

Looks like the FPS's bottom is contacting the frame there, and that's not normal. But it's no big deal to fix. It's most likely the FPS, which should not hang down below the bottom of the slide. If it's hanging down, dress it so it doesn't.

kup,No I wouldn't say it's normal, from your pics I'd say your firing pin stop is a bit long.It should not come below the rail of the slide, this is a part that needs to be fitted. You should remove it and carefully file it down until it is even with the rail.

Thank You, to all for the replies. Once I was pointed in the right direction it was one of those DUHS.

I cleaned the FPS and can see where it was worn/shiny and causing the frame wear. Also once it was cleaned and I knew where to look I could see it was loose and hanging down.

I can buy Wilson parts locally so I will pickup a FPS, firing pin and spring.

Thanks again.

Be advised, you may very well have to fit/file/dress the new one too

If the new one is sloppy, get an EGW oversize stop, the fle/stone on that, send the other new one back.

Yeah, you can see in the picture on the left where the right-hand side of the FPS seems a little worn - right where the spot on the frame is beveled. As everyone has said, dress or replace the FPS - it's cheap and easy to do. As for the spot on the frame, I don't think that little bit of wear will have any lasting impact on the performance or life of the gun. Perhaps a drop of Cold Blue on that spot will help mask the brightness of the bare metal.

I understand about using oversized if a regular is sloppy and that either or both might need some minor fitting.

This is a SA Champion with a lightweight aluminium frame and don't know if cold blue will work.

Thanks for all the quick responses.

It's basically only visible when the slide is off. Hit it with an appropriate marker. It won't wear off by friction, eh?

Also not sure Wilson makes a firing pin that fits Springfield 1911s. S.A. uses a special size firing pin. I had to get an Ed Brown specifically for Springfields and I still had to dress it slightly to fit the slide. Measure the firing pin diameter at the primer end and verify what you need before you buy.
