I have a Colt Govt. in SS. I want to install tritium sights. The front sight is staked on. Is there any way to figure out whether the front is wide or narrow tenon without removing the front sight? I searched but couldn't find anything helpful. Are most "narrow" with "wide" being the exception or the other way around?

coondog:
Colt switched to a wide tenon sometime in the 80's (late I think). If that doesn't provide enough info, I'll try & track down the year.

They went to the wide tenon with the Series 80 guns. I've not seen any of the new ones, so if its built in the last few years, I'm not sure.

Thanks guys!! I think it's gonna be wide. It's a series 80. I carry it concealed off duty. I didn't want to ring the front sight off to verify the tenon size and then have to carry it that way for two weeks waiting on the new one. Now that I'm more awake I realized that I usually point and shoot as opposed to aiming and shooting anyway. Think maybe I'll pop it off tomorrow.

Hey Coondog, 19elevin here. I believe Colt has a .125 tenon on their front sight. I'm recalling from memory which is not what is used to be, so double check me.
