Nighthawk.I like the quality of this pistol.I am ordering my second 1911 from them as I was impressed by the reliability of their product.

Bud... what problem did you have with Wilson..... Did Wilson fix the problem?
OD.... what is it about a Baer over the Nighthawk and Wilson that you prefer?
Well, I owned a Wilson once. ;)
I won't get into bashing them, so lets just say I wasn't thrill with the pistol.
Nighthawk, to be perfectly honest with you, I don't have much first hand experience with. I've never shot one so maybe I shouldn't even have commented, but in the hand, I just prefer how the Baer felt over the NH.

I vote Baer too, just because I have one on order. I ordered one because the owners of them are just about as fervent towards them as Colt owners are to their weapons. i dont have any reason to dislike the others though! good luck in your decision! :D

I wonder how long it will take Hunter to pick himself up off the floor? :p :D

I would take whichever was least expensive...all custom 1911's can be fantastic or can not, depending on the level of the craftsman that fitted it that day...

the vote is pretty much equal.... are they all really that good.... You rarely hear about Nighthawk and Wilson's but I have never read on the Baer thread about the Prowler.... Has anyone shot the Prowler?

I'd recommend the LB or the NH but I have no experience with NH on which to base that, only what people here have said about the ones they have. A number of years ago I had Wilson which I don't own anymore.
My LB has been a great 1911 and from what I can see all LB guns are built to the same level of perfection. I'm always impressed with how well my LB runs and how accurate it is.

Now I only have Baers.

I voted Nighthawk just because I've always wanted one. Don't have any personal experience with any of them. Maybe I just like the name! :p

Call me slow on the take-up, but I just realized the OP wants opinions on stub-weighted guns. I only have experience with two; the NH Predator and the LBC Prowler. However, they both shot and handled like any other example from the two makers. Both were very nice guns. I'd still take the Baer. I had one Wilson. That was more than enough.
You asked for reasons.
I prefer Kart, to Storm Lake barrels.
I prefer the harder, forged steel of the Baer frame and slide. I believe this affords greater durabilty and performance longevity.
On the Prowler, as on every other Baer I have fired, the trigger was superior, as compared to the Nighthawk(s).
I prefer the tighter lock-up on the Baer.
I prefer the way Baer machines more metal from under the grip panels. It makes for a more "natural" balance in my hands. This is purely personal preference.
I do not care for Perma Kote. If I were to foray into the Nighthawk nest again, I'd choose Diamond Black.
I do not care for LBC adjustable sights. They are evil, blood-letting demons. Ask for extra-extra rounding. I'd want my Prowler Bear Coated.

Three for me.

My SRP $2500, WTL $3050, and NH Talon $2475 are all great shooters. I enjoy shooting them all.
I love the feel of all of them hard to pick on feel.
They all shoot and perform the same.
That NH does a great trigger.
I like the heavy ness feel of the Baer
The WTL is a nicely put together pistol, should be for the money
I guess if price was a factor I would go with Bear or Nighthawk.

I have a Nighthawk and love it... the only issues that I have with Les Baer and Wilson are the lack of options... for as young as I am, I am blind as a bat and need a wide rear sight and I do not like the novak style sights that Les Baer offers... I can not say that I have ever shot a Wilson so I do not know....I forgot to mention that I would want fixed sights on whichever stub'd barrel gun.....

Nighthawk Personally I got to their site on occasion just to dream, drool and desire
hopefully one day I will have one.. but only after a few other additions first

Nope. Never a Prowler. I hope my post wasn't misleading. I've just been very fortunate to have been able to put a fair number of rds through a lot of different Baers. Prowler being one. ;)

Hi
I picked the Baer because at the time I happened to be thinking about target pistols.
It all depends a *lot* on what you plan to do with the pistol.

this gun would definitely be a defense gun.... for everyday carry..... if I went with the Baer, I would ask to have fixed sights on it.....

Hi
I poked at both of them (Monolith and TRS). I decided that for a general run around pistol the TRS was more to my liking. For a dedicated range gun, the heavyweight Monolith would be right up there.

I know that the Nighthawk uses a one piece barrel and the Wilson is a 2 piece, what is the Prowler's barrel?

22nd March 2008, 18:56
Hi
It's a Baer barrel :D :D :D
If it's two piece, the junction is *very* well hidden. My *guess* would be one piece.

Hi
It's a good bet that they buy them from somebody. Barrel making requires some pretty special equipment. It would be tough to get a return on the investment if you weren't also selling a lot of barrels in the open market.

Hi
Thanks!
I have had pistols that shoot well before, but that looked pretty dull. The neat thing about the TRS is that it looks every bit as good as it shoots.

Well I see you talking a lot more about the TRS than about the NH. I wonder why?

All three are great 1911's and would be excellent choices. However, as a owner of the three makes(not same models), the Wilson TE is the better choice. It is more money than the other two (not the deciding factor), but I feel a tad superior overall. Not a real good 'apples to apples' comparison. We can discuss more suitable models to compare. However, to me they are all pretty much equal in quality.

Friends,
Just so you know... current production Wilson Tactical Elite pistols use a one piece barrel. Older production pistols did use a 2 piece barrel.
The Prowler III is a two piece barrel.
Hope this helps.

thanks for clearing that up. I pulled the barrel out of my Wilson, and couldn't see how it could be two pieces!! My only current Wilson is a Carry Comp Professional, and the compensator part looks like all was machined from one piece. As I recall, Wilson does make their own barrels also.

Hi
Wilson is definitely in the barrel selling business. They sell both 45 barrels and AR barrels to a variety of outfits. I *assume* they have a barrel making setup ...

Wilson makes their own barrels and most of all the components for their 1911's, rifles and knives. that is why I consider them the leader in the field and my #1 choice. there is a reason why they are a few bucks more than the others.
