I am going to purchase a Colt Commander Model (NOT COMBAT COMMANDER)tomorrow.
The ad states it is a Commander Model series 70
serial number: 70B S83xxx
Seller states that the top part is Bright Nickel Finish and the bottom part is black...two-toned im guessing....
Seller recevied it as a partial trade and does not need it so is selling for $650
No box or manual......
Is this a good deal or pass?
Any suggestions please let me know as soon as possible. Thanks

I'd pass. The gun is not original. Neither is the finish. From what I can see in the picture; the hammer and trigger are not correct with the era of the pistol. Also the serial number your posting is a Combat Commander serial #. The lighweights began with CLW once the Combat Commanders began to be produced. It looks like it has an extended slide release too but I can't tell for sure because of picture quality. Does it have a extended slide release?

There's no such thing as a 70 series Commander.

Hows it going Justin,
Thanks for the information. It looks very tempting and I hope I can get as much information as I can. The seller does not know much about the pistol. States to have received it as a trade.
You wouldn't happen to have any for sale would you?

Very true ElrodCod. Welcome to the board. You are entirely correct about Colt never producing a series 70 commander. I almost posted the same thing but to be honest I'm quite tired of trying to use the correct terminology and being argued with and reprimanded by other members for being the terminology police.

I know what you mean....I just spent 30 minutes browsing GunBroker & it's amazing how many listings for "Series 70" Commanders there are.

I sympathize with Justin's reluctance to nitpick the terminology. Many people really don't mean "70 series" in the technical sense anyway. They just mean a Colt made roughly between WW2 and 1980 that does NOT have a firing pin safety. Used in that sense, there are Commanders that fit the category.
But to Chevy's situation: It would be nice to have some better photos of both sides of the pistol. It is bizarre enough to be interesting.

I'm with Justin on this.......PASS!! The serial number indicates it should be originally blued and I would think a Combat Commander.
Also the thumb safety and sights are not original, in addition to what Justin saw.
It might be a very nice piece, but, for me, not worth anywhere near 650.

It's only an OK price for a good original Commander. Modifying the gun doesn't always make it worth more, and I'd say from that photo that it's particularly true in this case.
This one, of the same era type was $550. at a local gunshop - not perfect and new, but a nice unmessed with pistol that had been holstered but not shot much:http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p263/twagger/guns/1CombatCommander1.jpg

Very nice stable o' ponies, chevy ;)! I'm with everyone else... I think you can do much better for $650. As previously mentioned, that pistol has been heavily modified externally...and you just don't know what could have been done INSIDE. I'd say hold out, cuz a there'll be a nicer one right around the corner :).
