What brand of leather holsters are more kind to a blued finish gun?? I would like to hear what everyone is carrying their 1911 in.

Wild Bill's Undercover/Covert Carry for IWB and deep concealment.
http://www.wildbillsconcealment.com/waist.html
For IWB but outside the shirt I use a Wild Bill's No Such Agency (no longer made but essentially an Undercover without the ability to tuck the shirt).
While not lined, the leather Bill uses has a very soft inside and it protects the gun very well.

I have my Kimber Gold Match in a Triple-K thumb-break leather holster. (Ordered out of Cabelas catalog.)
After having it about a week, I found it difficult to return it to holster without using both hands. The thumb-break strap would flop over the opening, very frustrating. So, I cut off the two straps and tightened the retention screw. I fished the edges of the leather and people who look at it now don't even notice it has been changed until I show them. The retention screw holds the pistol nice and tight.

All but one of my 1911s ride in Milt Sparks HR-Ltds, essentially a lined VM2. The $ and wait are worth it for the quality and all-day comfort. I have a Kimber Rimfire sub'd with a .245" tall front Dawson FO that has a wickedly sharp shadow hook on top that eats even sight-channeled leather; it's in a G-Code kydex.

I have a Brigade M-11 that is good looking, high quality and very comfortable. I like it.
I have heard that it is a "knock off" of a VM-2. Still, it took about 4 months to deliver, and was no cheaper than the VM-2. Probably could have order an "original". ???
Milt Sparks Axiom and Milt Sparks Summer Special II.

Sorry John, but after reading his FAQs, they're a non-starter for me...
"I would never, under any circumstances, recommend or approve of the cocked-and-locked carry of a weapon in any one of my holsters. The fact that there isn't a safety strap or other device between the hammer and firing pin would make it extremely dangerous to do so. This is why my master blocks have been made with the hammer down, safety off, and my holsters are moulded accordingly."

Do you think I would be recommending Andy's holsters if they were not OK for cocked and locked carrying? Andy (and every other small business owner) has to protect himself from lawsuits and that's what this section of his FAQ does. I assure you that his holsters are the best holsters you can find, and they work just fine with a cocked and locked 1911.

Steve C,
As John so correctly points out, the litigious nature of 21st century business practices means most holster makers must protect themselves from the lowest common denominator. In other words, the person who knows nothing about guns and the safety factors involved in carrying a gun in a holster.
Andy's designs (most especially those with a sweat or body shield) show that in the molding/boning process, the thumb safety is in the down postition. This has no negative effect on the fit, finish, or function of any of Andy's holsters.
As a side note, even the big players like Galco manufacture their holsters to utilize a hammer-down carry. Fortunately, the only holster in the Horseshoe Leather line to utilize a thumb break is Andy's shoulder holster. All others are constructed in a manner that the "fit" of the holster retains the handgun.

This is why my master blocks have been made with the hammer down, safety off, and my holsters are moulded accordingly."
HOWEVER, this is the rest of Andy's statement where you copied the above paragraph.
"May I state quite categorically that I have perfect faith in the design and function of the mechanical safety devices of 1911-style pistols. However, I work at a distance, so can have no inkling at all of the attitude, knowledge, and weapon-handling capabilities of any individual who purchases or uses a Horseshoe holster. Additionally, I have no way of monitoring the circumstances under which any item may be used or by whom, so can never be sure that these were appropriate i.e. that equipment was not being used in a way that was never intended.
Living, as we do, in a fiercely litigious society, I cannot run the risk of facing a lawsuit brought by some unknown individual who, after having shot himself or anyone else, for whatever reason, may then try to blame the accident on the fact that he was carrying his weapon, cocked-and-locked, with my approval, in one of my holsters. I am not for a moment suggesting that you may be that individual, but I like the idea of sleeping at night and, having reached the evening of my life, I have no wish to get involved with any situation which may, potentially, lead to a lawsuit, quite apart from not wanting to have the death or the severe wounding of anyone on my conscience. We all do it, but it would be insane for a company to recommend it. I'm not positve, but I would assume the same for condition 2.

I have a Brommelland Gunleather custom made for a 5" TLE II IWB, Galco horse hide IWB tuckable and Galco SkyOps tuckable both for 3" (Ultra CDP II), and Galco Concealable OWB's In 3", 4" and 5". I broke them all in as Gary Brommelland recommends; wrap the pistol in wax paper and leave it in the holster for a couple of days. No type of oil used for holster break in. None of the pistols show any holster wear.
Good luck!

I don't have a problem with his legal disclaimer, that's to be expected. I do however have a problem if he's boning the holsters with the safety off and hammer down as he states. As was mentioned earlier, Milt Sparks holsters have a notch in the body shield for the safety in the on position.
He could bone the holsters for the way 1911s are really used and still have the disclaimer.

Unfortunately, things don't work like that in the real world of unscrupulous barristers (no offense meant, Frank ;) ). Boning the body shield in a manner that suggests cocked and locked negates whatever disclaimer might be present on a web site or catalog.
As I said earlier, in discussing Andy Arratoonian's work, I've owned a holster with the body shield, and the safety indentation was hammer down. This didn't affect the holster, fit, or carrying of the weapon in the slightest.

I have a Dakota Defender IWB that's made by K&D Holsters, www.kdholsters.com. The owner, Kevin, is retired Navy and I really like the idea of supporting a fellow veteran. The one shown here is tan, and this is a "tuckable" holster; the only thing visable are the clips. This is a very comfortable holster and I find myself feeling for it often just to be sure I didn't leave it somewhere! The belt shown was also made by K&D; this one is 1 1/2", though I also have a 1 1/4" in black that I wear with dress pants.

I wear a black leather custom QD 1911 by SLW, for my Springfield GI. I like leather over other kinds of holster material. You will get some wear no matter what kind of material the holster is made of but it seems like leather is not as bad. Besides 1911's and leather just go together. Here are some pics.

I have 5 1911s. Les Baer, Wilson, Springfield, (2)Ed Brown, Kimber all are in K&D Holsters. They are custom fit, take about four months and cost almost half of what the BIG names cost. I did the one size fits all generics for a couple of years and all are in some drawer somewhere. Once you do custom you will never buy an "off-the-wall" holster again. Any high quality leather holster is going to be just as good as the next, everyone is going to have there own personal preference.the real question here is how well are you keeping your pistol up? Maintenance doesn't stop by just cleaning your pistol, you should give it a nice gentle rub down every night or day with a soft oil based cloth to help maintain your finish. Just sticking it in a holster isn't a cure all protection, you have to keep them up, the holster just helps from keeping them getting beatup! mine comes out of the holster at night gets wiped down and lays on the rag on the night stand till morning when it goes back to work.

But the little Yaqui is so handy...everyone of my 1911's fit, bananas fit, pliers, hammers (excepting the bigger ball-peens). If and when I find something new that suits me I will still use the Yaqui, as T Bone said "...once in a blue moon". Horseshoe Leather holsters only for me please.
Once you try one of Andy's holsters, you will never go back to anything else. Check the banner in the Sponsors Panel. Well worth the wait.
John,
I was taking a look a horseshoe leather holsters. I would like a HAK but they are not made for condition one carry. Have you found away around this?
Tom
LoRL, a common misconception if you only base your opinion on what Andy writes in his web site or just look at one of his holsters.
As anyone else, in these days of lawyers-dominated business environment, Andy can't affort to be dragged to courts because some idiot shoot himself on the leg or something similar. So he protects himself by saying that his holsters are not to be used for condition one carrrying.
Fortunately, they can be used and they are the best I've ever tried. Don't let what is written in his site scare you away. I have never owned a HAK, but I am sure the quality will be nothing short of superb, just like any other holster made by Andy. And it works perfectly with cocked-and-locked, Andy just doesn't say so, for the obvious reasons. Give Andy a call, tell him that I recommended it, and I can promise you you will enjoy the chat and the holster. Oh, don't talk to him about his music playing, or else you will be on the phone for hours.
Frank
28th May 2008, 02:45
John,
I understand why Andy makes the statements he does about condition 1 carry, and I agree that in general, his holsters will work perfectly well for condition 1 carry. I have a couple of his 62L IWB holsters and have used them for condition 1 carry. I personally would be concerned about the HAK, however.
It's the only holster that Andy makes with a thumb break. I looked at the pictures on his website carefully, and they show a 1911 with the hammer down. The thumb break appears to wrap around the hammer very low on the hammer, under the rowel or spur, at the top of the thumb break, and, most significantly, with the thumb break sitting very close to, or even touching, the tang.
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/fiddletown_2006/HAK_MMhammer.jpg
But when a 1911 hammer is cocked, it appears thus --
http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l142/fiddletown_2006/IMG_4081ahammer.jpg
So I wonder if the thumb break on the HAK will work properly with a condition 1 1911.
DVC
Good point Frank, I noticed the pictures too, that's why I told Soft Walker to call Andy. Maybe that picture is there for the same reason as his disclaimer for Condition 1. I do not know, never owned a HAK.

For general outdoor carry, I use a 1942 "Tanker" shoulder rig
from El Paso Saddlery. It keeps the pistol out of the way, centered
lower to the belt. Looks good too.

Here is one that sees a lot of use from El Paso - no nonsense and always there. I agree with RANDALL on the 'TANKER' holster from El Paso as well. I have several and enjoy them. Were I younger, I might think about the 'HARDIN' style, but I am just too old to change. :D
Grips are 'MAMMOTH IVORY' on this Commander. :)

Very nice looking pistola, I like the grips. I need a backround like that for my holsters.

Interesting timing...to those looking for reasonable turn around time, a nicely finished, fairly priced, comfortable IWB holster and great customer contact / response via email. I suggest you check out nm-holsters.com . I have enjoyed using Nick's products in the past and continue to do so.... here are the 2 latest editions to the collection.

You place your order. You're billed only when he actually starts work on your holster. You're notified via email when it's been shipped. Accurate estimate of holster/shipping completion. That's just good business.

Nice looking roscoe, Tusker. And I agree that El Paso saddlery does nice work. I used one of their Western rigs for CAS and i wear their belts. I also have some of their Tom Threeperson holsters for several of my revolvers as well. I like their floral carving.

Just got my UBG (http://www.ubgholsters.com) Bonneville in the mail today for my springfield champion and took it to dinner with me. It's definitely a quality product. Great retention and rides very comfortable. Everything's handmade and the wait time is only 3-5 weeks right now. Got mine between 3-4. Nate does great work and I'll be ordering from him again in the very near future.

From all I've read, Milt Sparks is the way to go. If you don't want to wait, or want something while you're waiting, Galco makes a good holster.
I carry my Kimber Ultra Stainless in a holster that I bought from Kimbers web site. It is a Galco holster (came in a Galco bag) with the Kimber Logo in the leather. Very secure too.
Nice holster...a little 'pricey'. You pay to have Kimbers logo on it. Conceals my Ultra with my shirt out. Once broken in, you can reholster easily.

I usually carry in an OWB Alessi DOJ model, uncanted, on the strong side.
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f179/6401glendale/Gun%20Stuff/DocH_DOJ-Lft.jpg
BUT.......if I could only own one holster, it would be a Wilson Lo-Profile, a GREAT OWB pancake style holster - reasonably priced and about as finish-friendly as they get.

I carry my 1911 in a Don Hume IWB holster. During the cooler days, and then winter where carrying under a jacket, I use a Blackhawk Serpa holster with locking retention.

Today (as most days) a Milt Sparks Versa Max 2 (today it's the HS model, horsehide with shark trim). Some days a Galco Miami Classic shoulder rig. OWB, I recently bought a D.H.Bullard Bodyguard (not bad) and a Galco training holster (like the old Gunsite model, but no logo) and recently ordered a Milt Sparks Axiom. Oh, a Galco Yaqui paddle once in a blue moon.
Seems I owe you guys some pictures too!
Since this post, I've run a month each with the leather lined silent Thunders from Tucker (one OWB, one IWB, bought after reading Ping Ping's review in the E-Zine), the Axiom I had on order came in, ran it a month or so, then most recently the Milt Sparks Summer Special II came in last week.
The short answer, the VM2 is still my favorite! Pics later today, I promise... :wl:

It's reallllly hard to beat the VM2 for comfort. I've got a Summer Special II also and I don't nearly like it as much.
I'm on my 2nd VM2 (different size) and couldn't be happier with them.

+1 My VMII is the most comfortable holster I have ever worn. They will carry all my babies from now on.

I use a Sparks Summer Special II IWB and a Mitch Rosen Premiere OWB to carry my Commander sized 1911s. I like them both. For my Officer sized pistols, I use a Don Hume JIT slide holster for OWB. It works great and is very reasonably priced. I also use a Gould and Goodrich IWB from their Gold Line. It rides a lot higher than my Sparks SS II and I have found I prefer the Sparks.
I don't generally carry a full size Govt. model. If I ever do, I have a cheap nylon should holster rig I use.
The only photo I have is one of my Sparks with my Sig Revolution C3.

+1 on the CrossBreed Holsters. Picked up 1 two weeks ago for SigPro and after a few days of wearing ordered 2nd for my usual carry (1911 style). Only problem is a little guilt over leaving the VM2 in the drawer...I'm sure we'll be reunited some day :) Oh...and NO...don't ask about a new home for the VM...wife is already trying to score for her Para.

I carry IWB in a Sparks HRLTD. I sold my VMII shortly after I got the limited because the limited is just as comfortable while being thinner.
I know of no one in the gun industry ever to recommend, or even tacitly suggest carrying cocked and locked. We all do it, but it would be insane for a company to recommend it. I'm not positve, but I would assume the same for condition 2.
Here's my favorite:
I wish I'd seen that picture earlier, except for the belt taper, that is the same rig I have on order from Tucker. That only confirms my desire for such a rig. I was on the fence about the swirl vs. cross cut.
