View Full Version : 12 Years of Deliberation Lands a New GCT!

After 12 years of deliberating on a .45 ACP I finally purchased a SS Gold Cup Trophy. I got it from GunsAmerica.com for $898, NIB (2007 model according to Colt with the 18,XXX serial number).

I shot it on Saturday and quickly found out that I have a long way to go to become proficient at free hand targeting. I know the Colt’s ability is far better than my own from the results on the sand bag rest. What a weapon! The balance is just right and it feels like an extension of my arm.

I plan on shipping it to Colt’s custom shop in the future for a S&A beavertail grip safety, trigger work, and possibly the S&A mag guide as well, although the frame is beveled fairly well for the magazine. Should I leave out the mag guide?

One other question. I have read quite a few of your postings in this forum and have noticed several references to the GCT not being made in the custom shop. The blued version’s model # is 05879CS and the CS stands for custom shop I believe. When I called Colt’s customer service to ask them if the SS model #05070X was not made in their custom shop because it lacked the CS designation, the kind lady said they both are manufactured in the custom shop. Has anyone else heard that the current GCT is a custom shop creation?

In any case, this forum in no small way influenced my purchase decision. Your helpful insights definitely steered me away from lesser knock-off imitations. As I looked at local gun shops, I was amazed at how few dealers carry Colts and the ones that didn’t had plenty of pony bashing to go around. One shop in particular had a “1911 expert” that was telling all of their customers that the Colt frames were manufactured in the Philippines. This assertion didn’t fare very well with the customer service rep at Colt who emphatically assured me that Colt is 100% American made. That sealed the deal for me.

I am very privileged to own such a handcrafted masterpiece with such a rich history!

I want to attach pics but when I click on the insert picture icon, nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?

Welcome to the forum, you bought a great pistol as your first 45 ACP! 12 years is a long time to think about it but I'm certain you'll be happy with your choice. Click on the link below for the explanation on how to post a pic.

Nice choice on pistols. I have run better than 10000 rounds through my GCT and have never experienced a pistol failure.
They are made in the USA, I promise. I believe some of the building of the GCT is done on the factory floor (which is a few feet from the custom shop) such as the machining of the receiver and slide blanks, which really is no big deal because the whole factory is really a custom shop where each step is still done by hand.
I imagine the final fitting and such is completed by the custom shop.
Looking forward to the pictures.

Congrats on a great Colt. To my knowledge all GCT are now regular production pistols. I am sure that that could change in the future. Good luck with your new pistol.

You have a great pistol, and I think Hunter is 100% on how they are produced at Colt.

Nice colt. I just bought one also just like yours from AJC sports on the Guns America site. Nice job with the pics. I have to work on posting some nice pics. Watch the roll pins on the rear sites. Mine works its way out about 1/4 inch and I have to tap it back in. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. :D

Huh? There shouldn't be rollpins in the Colt Bomar style sight shipped on the stainless model Trophy. At least mine doesn't have any...http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p263/twagger/guns/agoldCupTrophy.jpg

See? No rollpins :D

(sorry about that - I thought that this phot would show the sight better than it does)

You probably recognize the 2008 Colt catalog in the background Hunter. I saw a 2005 post in this forum where someone said they wish Colt had a nice glossy catalog to look at. I think Colt monitors this forum for market research. I would if I was them. Presto! We have a nice glossy catalog. If you don't have one, Colt will send you one if you say "purdy-please."

KevWel, I bought mine at AJC sports too through gunsamerica.com. How much did you pay for yours if you don't mind? Mine was $898, best I could find on the web anywhere. I also saw a Special Combat Gov NIB at gunsamerica.com last week for $1095! I really wanted stainless, not hardcromed carbon steel though so I'm glad I got the GCT. I have successfully bought three guns from them so far.

I haven't had any trouble with the rear Bomar sight on mine. AJC Sports must like Colts. I've seen their name on this Colt forum quite a few times.

I paid $898 plus shipping. It was the best deal I could find. I am very happy with their service. They seem really nice. The "rollpin" I am referring to is the little pin at the very front of the site. I may be calling it by the wrong name. Do you see it in your pic Hill? It is that little pin at the very front of the rear site? I am a newbie, so I may be calling it the wrong thing. Thanks

To tell the truth I don't know what kind of pin is at the front of the Bomar style sight that comes on late model Gold Cup Trophy Stainless guns. If it's a rollpin Colt installed some sort of plugs on each side as the holes are solidly filled.

We know about pins in the Eliason sights on Gold Cups but I think it's the solid pin that makes problems by coming out. A rollpin was one fix for that problem.

Great looking Gold Cup. I have the blued version and like it a lot.

I don't think you have to worry about the roll pin on the stainless models. I believe they use different sights than the blued models.
