View Full Version : Is this a good price, or a little high?

Just got back from my local funshop, they have a Colt LW Commander in the all blued finish. It comes with nothing except a blued mag.
It has the Colt wood medallion grips. They are asking $850, and I think that's a little high, but I want a LW Commander pretty bad.
Also, how does the finish on these hold up? I am not crazy about blued only guns, but I do like the look of the darker finishes on 1911s.
One more thing, could someone post a pic of what a Colt feedramp is supposed to look like, I looked at this particular one and it didn't look right to me, looked like there was no feed ramp, just went straight to the barrel, I may be wrong though, but it did worry me.
If you couldn't already tell, I am new to Colts, but I do want a 1911 w/ the pony on it. ;) Thanks in advance for the help.

$850's a little high to me too. The finish will hold up fairly well with a little upkeep.

$850 for a LW Commander is high. Series 80 or 70? I have bought an unfired series 80 LW commander last year for $499. Just to give you an idea.

K9346, Welcome to the world of Colts, and good choice, looking for a "pony'd" 1911 ;). $850 sounds kinda' high to me as well for a Series 80 Commander....BUT, if perhaps it's an older pre-series 80 model ('49-'69), with a "LW" suffix, or possibly a 1970's model, i think it might well be worth that price, depending of course on condition. Some additional info and/or pics and serial number would really help in determing the value.

Thanks for all the help guys, it is an older model with the LW prefix, and it is in good shape. Definately a pre series 80.

OD, I just know that feed ramp wasn't that purty when it left Colt. Was it?

Yeah, OD the feed ramp definately was not that pretty on the one I'm looking at. You can shave in yours! ;)

I'm sure it wasn't that pretty. ;)
That isn't from one of my pistol, I can't recall where I found that picture or I would give due credit for it. :o

It looks like who ever did the polish on it may have gotten it right, polish but not to remove metal. Makes clean up a bit easier as well.

In that case...and others might disagree...assuming it's 100% original (i.e., NO modifications), i might just pay $850..keeping in mind, these are my absolute favorite Colts ;). See if you can do some negotiating.... The "LW's" are obviously out of production and a highly desirable model. They often sell in that price range on gunbroker.
Good luck, and keep us posted!

Do you really think that is representative of real world pricing. I bought a 2K wedding ring for $50.00 once, doesn't mean they all go for that. It is a little high.....but if that is what you want and it may be the only one you see for a while and you have the money now..... Take care of it and hold onto to it for a while and it will be a GOOD deal. Enjoy, have fun, live a little!!

POSTED TO ADD: In your post you say "LW" prefix".... Are you sure it isn't a "LW" suffix? Prior to 1968, all Commanders had a LW suffix. I'm not sure about the Series 80 serial numbers.
OD*, Do you know what the Series 80 serial numbers look like (or if any of them say "LW" at some point?)?

No Sir Eli, I don't know a great deal about the '80 Commanders serial numbers, sorry.

Eli,
Mine is 80B.....S38xx
I think the lightweight has "CLW" as first symbols, followed by "80"
the space dots are not present on the pistol; I put them in because the censor will stop the close proximity of the two letters....for some reason :)

No problem OD*...i don't either ;). Thanks. I think we spoke about this a few months ago...the lack of literature on "modern era" Colts (specifially Commanders). I've still not been able to find anything :(.

Thanks Hill. That's always been my understanding as well..."CLW" preffix on the alloy's.
