Went to the range last night with my Smith and Wesson 1911SC.

Shot a lot of FMJ, tested some 230gr Golden Sabers, and some 200gr Double Taps.

The SC ate up the Golden sabers and spit them out no problem. The Double Taps were another story. I had many FTF with the Double Taps. Upon field striping the gun later that night I noticed the recoil spring was noticeably lighter then the 20# I bought to replace it. And even thought I only had 1000rds through the gun so far I replaced it with the heavier spring anyways.

I want these double taps to work. What should I do to make them feed properly. 22# spring?? Or should I go back to Golden Sabers?

Thanks,
Matt

The GS is a very good round based on everything I've read about it and it feeds in some of my guns that have troubles with other hollow points.

You're on the right track with the Double Taps. You will likely have to go with a stronger recoil spring. When you do that you also want to make sure that you are using some pretty stiff magazine springs so the faster returning slide doesn't over run the mags ability to push the next round into battery.

Haven't shot the combination you are using, however I went through very similar experimentation when I started shooting Double Tap in my 10mm Colt. What may become an issue is when you get it sprung correctly for the hotter ammo you could have problems shooting regular ball ammo with that spring.

Look forward to reading the response from those more versed in the technical operation of the 1911. Also would like to hear how it works out for you.

Yea, I just received a bunch of the 230 gr match load from doubletap. I wonder if I will need to change the spring in my sw1911sc, it's brand new and I haven't shot it yet. I hope to go this weekend. I had shot a bunch of doubletap through my Delta Elite with no probs. This was after I installed a King's recoil kit for it. I guess I'll just go and shoot the SC and see what happens.

The 1911sc comes from the factory equipped with a 20# recoil spring.

Something else I thought of that might effect feeding, is the OAL. The SC feeds 230gr JHP no problem. The 200gr Double Taps are noticeably shorter in OAL.

I’m going to try the 230gr Double Taps next and see if that don’t help feeding.
