I have a Colt Defender Plus (bought new) that has about 500 rounds though it. The original claw broke while qualifying for a gun permit. Luckily I was at the end of the run. Since then I have replaced it with a Wilson Bullet Proof. Fitted and adjusted it per the Wilson article found in the tech section of this site. Test fired 3 clips through it and had the following results. The brass was flung up and and out to the back in a fairly high arc for most of the 8 shots. Except for one or two would be sent straight out. Also, in the second mag I had 1 failure that resulted in what looked like a stove pipe but was with a loaded round. In the third mag I had another failure that resulted in not pulling the empty case out of the chamber. I was using Winchester USA hardballs. Not sure what to do with this many symptoms. Thanks for any help.

Here's a couple of threads relative to your problem:

maybe a search on extractor or ejector

A guess is that if it ran okay with the origional extractor then the replacement needs tuned. I would try to find out why the origional extractor broke with only 500 rounds - something else is amiss???

you don't have to be a gunsmith to shoot a 1911 but it appears to help......

Make an offering to the 1911 god and hope Tuner takes an interest in your problem.

The magazine caused the extractor to break. (Search "Function of the Dimple)

The magazine caused the last round "stovepipe" failure to feed.
(Search Bolt-Over Base Misfeed)

The Factory Extractor appeared to be MIM. I was using 2 new Wilson Mags. I will try the same test with the original Colt mags.

I test fired my Colt with original mag. First mag shot good. Second mag failed to extract. It pulled the casing about half way out. You can see a mark on the casing were the claw pulled off. I cleared it and fired more with similar failures. The failures seemed to come after a wild casing ejection. I did add some tension to the extractor to see if it would help. Again, the first mag shot good then the second mag started the same failures as described before.
According to the markings on the casing the claw is griping almost halfway down the rim. Not sure what to do now.

Extractor issue. The magazine doesn't have anything to do with extraction.

After studying the "Controlled Feed Principles" article Tuner wrote, I slow cycled my Defender. I noticed that the mag losses control of the round about the time the bullet nose hits the bottom edge of the barrel. It then jumps up in front of the extractor. Is this normal for slow hand cycling?
I also noticed that there seems to be very little difference between the Wilson Mag and the Original Colt mag. Both are 8 shot and the case sits fairly low. I will look into getting a Hybrid design 7 shot mag.
Is it possible that the casing is swelling to the point that the extractor can't pull it out? There is a pretty good mark on the FTE casings where the claw pulled off.

Tuner,
I guess I am hoping with all this detail you can give me the magic fix.

Horseman...Slowly cycling a round isn't a good test. It's almost guaranteed to do what you describe. A better way is to remove the recoil system, and push the slide to battery smoothly and briskly...but without a lot of force.

The mechanism that causes the magazine to lose control of the round is the inertial bouncing around generated during recoil. You can't duplicate that by hand-cycling.
