View Full Version : New FPS in place

Still working on my SA 1911A1 Loaded. I got my new EGW FPS in Thursday. I had it installed that night. Along with a 16# recoil spring and a 19# main.

First I fit the stop to the frame. When I got the gun the FPS was 0.003" below minimum width; the frame is right at maximum. I got the stop dressed down so that just before the last few strokes with the stone, it would go into place with effort. It took a brass punch to remove it. Half a dozen more strokes and it now it will just slide into place.

The extractor took some work to. The slot in the rear of the extractor was to narrow and not deep enough. Again going slow and easy, the slot was widened out and made deeper so that the FPS just went in.

There is no play at all now.

Went outside and tried it. Three different mags and everything seemed to work fine. On the fourth mag, the last round got caught with the mouth of the case jambed into the hood of the barrel and the rear of the case setting on the breech face of the slide.

Now I had tested the extractor using the loaded and empty case and shaking the slide. When I did that all seemed well. But I remembered reading here that the extractor should be snug going into the slide. Mine would fall out under it's own weight. So a little tweak to increase tension seemed in order.

Now the extractor goes in with a little resistance, but it does not have to be forced into place. Two more mags, no failures. When I first replaced the FPS the cases went from 3:00 to 6:00, anywhere from 2 feet to 10 feet away. After the adjustment they all go at 3:00 and about 6 feet right.

Thanks to all for sharing their knowledge. :)

OK, now why did you use a 19 lbs main spring? I mean you did everything right, why mess up the system with a 19 lbs spring? 23 lbs is the standard.

John,

Why does a 19# main 'mess up the system'????

Gun runs fine. Good primer hits, good ejection.

FWIT, 19# is all EGW has.

Well, if you read all the posts about the square bottom firing pin stop, you will notice that the whole thing is a system. FPS, 16 lbs recoil spring, 23 lbs main spring, they all work together in absorbing the cycling slide force. Order yourself a 23 lbs spring, you won't regret it.

Hello John,
I'm really interested in this concept and hope you can enlighten me.
Thanks.

Take a look at this thread, Bo

I'll a share a true story about my Daughter.
Her first "real" shooting session with lg bore handuns was at the indoor range last summer
She shot 200 rounds.
100 thru my Airweight snubbie and 100 thru my full size Para

a couple days latter we were shooting in the back yard.
She shot a mag full of 45 then turned and said,

"dad, they kick as much when shooting outdoors"

That day she wasn't shooting my Para.
She was shooting my RIA with sm radius FPS
