There are several differences, most having to do with ergonomics. Browning updated the pistol a few years after the first one was made. The most noticeable one is that there's an arch on the mainspring housing (the part that lies under your palm) that tends to raise the point of aim if you are inclined to shoot low, as I am.
Other differences include, but are not limited to, relief cuts in the frame either side of the trigger to enable shooters with shorter fingers to reach the trigger more easily. Also the trigger is located a little farther back for the same reason.
For some reason -- having to do with looks, in my opinion -- the vogue now is for flat mainspring housings, so that's almost all you see advertised. With practice, you can disassemble a 1911 and put on either kind of mainspring housing. Both ar available as aftermarket options.
Welcome to the club. The pistol is a great obsession.

1911: Old design, outdated since 1924, hard to find today and insanely expensive, unless you are a collector.
1911A1: All 1911 produced after 1924.
Differences: Your prime resource for 1911 pistols (that's M1911.ORG Home Page, which is THE site you should be visiting if you are interested in M-1911s, and is located in http://www.m1911.org, Home Page) in the History section will give you all the details.

You can also click the Colt icon on the forum index page, and get to Colt's website. This year's catalog shows a reproduction of the original 1911 model, which is historically accurate in almost every way (except it's missing the lanyard loop on the magazine). All the others in the catalog will be the 1911A1 style (including the 1991).

The new Colt replica is a copy of an early 1918 specimen, which did NOT have the lanyard loop magazines. The loops on the mags were discontinued in early 1917.

OD*, with your permission, I'll use that picture in the Home Page, to show the differences between the 1911 and the 1911A1. Please let me know if it is OK with you.

John, the picture is linked to an article written by Dana Kamm, the address is http://www.m1911.org/images/dana/ww1replica/1911-1911A1text.jpg
So I think you already have it on your site somewhere, I can't recall where right now.
