Hello, I'm new to this site and have been reading all the intresting facts and info. I purchased this pistol new in the late 80's and have fired maybe 5 to 6 hundred rounds through it.
I've searched the forum without any luck for more background information in regard to this model. I guess what I want to know is should I save it or shoot it. Thanks.

?????

Is this a Colt model you are asking about, or a custom pistol made by Chip McCormick?

Straight from Colt.

Hawkmoon:

I found one of the above mentioned pistols for sale at the link below. Looks quite a bit like an earlier XSE model. Pretty neat.

I have seen a McCormick Factory Racer, but don't know much about them. I was told they were made by Colt through a deal with Chip McCormick who was and probably still is a parts supplier to Colt. I would guess that most if not all the parts like grip safety, slide stop, thumb safety and maybe sights were CMC products. I'd say they are relatively scarce if they were made in the 80's, as I have just recently seen the only one I ever remember seeing at a gun show in Harrisburg, PA. They were asking $950 for it, it was like new but did appear to have been fired.

Since I haven't gotten much input I guess it's rare enough to just save instead of shoot. There must be somebody out there that has some in depth info on this pistol.

Colt must have made them in different barrel lengths, the one I saw in Harrisburg was short, 3 1/2 inch I think. I just saw one on GunsAmerica with a 5 inch barrel.

I purchased a unfired McCormick factory Racer about a year ago in California. There were 500 guns made only....and each has the no. of gun engraved on the right side of frame above trigger frame. Mine says I have the 20th gun made........All I know is that some consider this to be one of the finest shooting 1911's that were produced......I certainly fired mine, and I even put the idiot mark on the thing too!.....I was learning the 1911 platform with this gun, so trial and error.....was my only recourse.....I think you should use the gun. If it was unfired in NIB condition, I would maybe think about not shooting, but you already did!............Keep shooting.........
