Was at a show this past weekend looking for some replacement grips for a Rock Island .45, and got a deal on them. However....in searching the bargains, I also happened across a stainless S & W 686 .357, which after some dickering I purchased for $400. (I know, it's a wheelgun, but I'm an old fashioned guy - sue me.) Pistol itself is in fine shape, but the grips show some wear, a little peeling here and there. These are typical old style S & W target grips, oversized checked walnut, which I like better than the rubber Pachmyer S & W uses now. With the checkering it would be kind of a pain to completely refinish the grips. Bearing in mind that as with my other pieces, this is a shooter and not a display piece - has anyone had any experience with tung oil as a sealer, just to prevent additional peeling and so forth? Should I finish both grip side and frame side?Any other ideas or options? All input gratefully accepted....
