View Full Version : Colt vs Tupperware at the range yesterday

I'm certainly not a competition shooter, but I'm a pretty decent shot. I went to the range yesterday and there was a group of five 20-somethings shooting in the stall next to me taking turns with their tupperware 9mm. They were pretty loud, bragging about how great they could shoot, how awesome the gun was, etc.
I watched them for a few minutes as they were shooting at one of those silhouette targets at 7 yards, with hits scattered all over the paper, and I decided to have a little fun with them. I normally shoot standard 25 yard competition targets, but I went to the counter and bought 2 of the big silhouettes they were shooting. I sent one out to 15 yards, about twice as far away as theirs, and quickly unloaded 2 magazines full of FMJ's into it and reeled it back in.
They all stopped shooting when they heard the roar of the .45, and peered around the corner when I brought it back, with not much left of the "X" ring but a huge hole where the paper had been... this prompted a "wow, what kind of gun is that" discussion followed by 20 minutes of blissful silence as their bragging quickly subsided....
hehe ;)

What kills me is that it's so easy to shoot decently with 15 minutes of instruction in the fundamentals, and yet most of the time when I go to the range, most targets look horrible. When I was in basic training in the USAF, I had never touched a gun before. There were lots of guys who had "been shooting my whole life", and after a morning with the combat arms instructors, I out-shot all of them with the M-16. Probably because I didn't know anything so I actually listened to what they had to say ;)
It was the same way when I was a police officer - most of the guys were less-than-great shots, and never practiced except the mandatory twice-a-year qualification sessions. The owner of the local range was laughing about that yesterday, and said most of the time the cops are the worst shots of all his customers.

Has anyone ever told you that you're a devious (and cruel) man?
WELL DONE!

Nice shooting!
I can be biased here, so I don't understand how someone can shoot a Glock compared to a 1911...if they enjoy shooting! ;)
You properly "schooled" them.

I've got a Glock also, in addition to several other guns - but none of them are as fun to shoot as the 1911. I'm addicted.... and all my others guns are now in the safe, where they will sit until I finally decide to get rid of them. My carry gun is now my Colt New Agent, and my range gun is now the Gold Cup.

Excellent job my friend. I am glad you were able to help those with lesser understanding.
Real nice shooting. I hate I was not there just to see the looks on their faces though.

Well, if they hadn't been bragging and had expressed any interest, I would have given them the 5-minute "shoot better" clinic... worked wonders for my wife, who is now an excellent shot.
Besides, I generally try to avoid spending too much time talking to people whose pants are hanging 8" below their underwear - they already know everything ;)

Good job. Too many learn all they know from tv, movies and others that know too little and then think tupperware and 9mm are the only thing to have. I've been told on a couple occasions that a 9mm is much more powerful than any other round handgun or rifle. (DOH!!!)

Funny, I wish I shot my 1911 as consistently as my Glocks ;)

Were they holding them sideways - gangsta style? - Lee
(BTW, I own eight Glocks, but I know how to shoot them, and my pants are on right.)

Funny how that works for different folks. Even my cheap Springer GI, take off the Springer slide, put on a WWII Remington surplus GI slide with WWII internal surplus GI parts, Colt Mk IV NM barrel and it shoots better, fast/more accurate, than either my G17 or G20 with KKM 6" "Match" barrel.
Good tutoring job PakWaan. :)
