Two years ago at the range I used to shoot IDPA at they had a Colt 1991A1 for sale. The asking price was somewhere around $519. I went ahead and bought the pistol but it was noting fancy or really collectible so it was one of those "it was a good deal even if I did not need it" situations. I took it to the range about twice and ran a few hundred rounds through the pistol. It fed like a Colt and was accurate enough. I felt I did good so I went home detail stripped it and cleaned it up. After that it sat in my safe (for about two years) until a few weeks ago.
OD and I have been talking about carry pistols, adjustable sights, and all that stuff we talk about. I had another conversation with Ping Ping and he hammered me pretty hard about using a pistol with adjustable sights as a carry piece (as Dan had done but not as aggressive). I decided to put my beloved Gold Cup Trophy up and give this Colt a whirl. I added a A-O arched mainspring housing with a lanyard loop as I have taken a cotton to lanyard loops.
I took it back to the range and ran about 200 rounds of homecast LSWC, Winchester 230gr +P Rangers, and Winchester 230gr FMJ with no failures again and this time I was really trying to test it. Accuracy was pretty good (not quite as true as my GCT but dang close).
Anyway sorry to ramble on so much but yall know how I get.
So after a few conversations with friends and some reluctance I have chosen to make this pistol my new sidearm.
I believe the 1991A1 are well made pistols and I am confident in this one and to keep interest a picture of Leroy the cat.

Hi

Good grief what's this world coming to ... Hunter gives up a Colt 1911 and replaces it with another pistol. Video at 10.... :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Bob I know it is shocking but at least it is still a Colt. I am getting into the mind set for a carry pistol less is more.

Hunter,
I think Leroy likes the change....that's what all the "yelling" is about :D.

Seriously, i think the A1's are great guns and often looked over. I don't own one, but i'd like to. I'd really like to buy a COMPACT actually.
I also agree that "less is more" with regards to carry. I used to carry my Kimber CDP Pro, with all the bells and whistles, but have taken to carrying my stock OACP (and occassionaly alternating with my stock Commander).

Let me ask though....Why would you want/need adjustable sights on a carry gun? Curious...

Are those the stock grips? They almost look like early Commander stocks... (edited to add: after a second look they do look like the standard black ORM stocks)
Great Colt (and cat)! ..And i really like the lanyard loop MSH.

Hi

I'm sure the shock will be felt at the Carlisle gun show (400 big tables) tomorrow. I expect to see tables full of GCT's flooding the market ...

Have you taken a look at a Commander? John got me looking at them, and they seem to make a lot of sense for concealed carry.

Leroy was in the throws of a mind bending yawn when I took that picture.
I have a 1991A1 Compact as well and it is a great little pistol. I carry it at work sometimes but I do prefer a fullsize pistol.
I really have a thing for Elliason sights and I do love the sight picture they offer so that was my reasoning for adjustable sights on a carry pistol and I love my GCT.
I am thinking on shooting my next match with this pistol (I doubt I would do much worse :D ) and seeing how that works.

Hi

Gee, you own more than one Colt? :D :D :D :D :D :D

I agree that the 5" simply feels right. I suspect that's a function of having shot a *lot* of rounds through one. If the 5" is what you are the most comfortable with, carry the 5".

Bud I replaced the roll pin with a solid pin with the slight bend from Colt on the Elliason and put a drop of red Loctite on each side. I did dress the sharp edges off the rear of the blade to decrease snag. I have never has any issues with Elliason but OD and Ping are very convincing. I figured I would at least give it a try and see it isn't like I would sell my GCT so if I decide to go back no sweat. I am getting partial to the 1991A1 though.
I am going to do a little experimenting but I do appreciate you having my back. I have always liked you Bud but Ping talks pure trash about you on the phone. :D

Mike Leroy has all his teeth, is that some sort of sly about him being a Southern cat? :p

That may be correct, I like old Ping though he is very....enthusiastic.
I reckon it is a little wrong to be talking about him and he is no where to be found but I am cool with that.

Hunter, my friend, the great thing about this forum, and knowing all the wonderful characters who inhabit this space, is the ability each of us has to choose their own particular weapon. Whether it has adjustable sights, is short or long in the barrel, or tiny like the New Agent, we can select our own method of carry, and go for it. We might get razzed a little for whatever it is, but in the end, it's still our decision.

...........as long as it's still a COLT! :D :D :D :D :D

Hunter, welcome to the club.....you already know I bought the O1911 as a carry piece, so I won't belabor the point....it's the first gun I've owned that is even more minimalist than a 1911A1....I used to carry a stainless GCNM, also, the edges of the rear sight rounded, the loose rollpin replaced with a length of hex-key (my thinking the tool steel was plenty shock-resistant, and the hex shape self-locking), the FLGR and collet bushing swapped for standard Colt rod and Kings solid bushing....after having the 01911 for a while, especially in looking at it and handling it, a 1911A1 looks and feels positively wierd....almost the same shock I'd have in going from a 1911A1 to a Gunsight....that long tail sticking out the aft end of a 1911A1 now looks ridiculous to me......change takes a while to settle in, but it obviously settles in with a resounding thud.....

I didn't argue with Bonehead about adjustable sights, he ask my opinion I told 'im, I don't like them on a carry gun and as you said, personal choice. ;)

Hunter,

It sounds like you wrung the pistol out properly. It should make a fine carry gun.

And tell Leroy that Grimmie says "hey."

I seem to have recall a few knock down drag out discussions with you on this very matter too my friend. I'm just glad your happy. Do yourself a favor and make sure to still take the GCT to the range regularly. Or even make it a bedside/home defense gun.

Adjustable sights make for good carry, thinking about changing the .38Supers over to adjustable and a 50yd zero for backyard carry. :D

This ORM 91A1 Lew Horton (combat/target) fused a pair of Golden Sabers, was my CCW for a long time until replaced by an XSE; but it still gets double carry service.

Thanks Horse, I am in purgatory now. I feel guilty about the GCT being in the safe but she deserve a break but the 1991A1 is a true pistol so I will give her a chance.
I do appreciate yalls thoughts. I hate to say it but OD is pretty sharp. I am going to give this 1991A1 a hard run.

are merely that, opinions. Personal defense choices are, well, personal. For over 20 yrs. I've carried both fixed and adjustable sights, on and off duty. Still do as a matter of fact. Depends on what I'm wearing, where I'm going and what season it is. Kinda like firearms as fashion accessories -----

And I, for one, don't think a comparison between adjustable sights on revolvers and self-loaders is valid at all....it's the difference in magnitude of the forces acting on the sights....the momentum of the revolver as it seeks to leave the sights behind is relatively gently braked by human flesh.....the self-loader slide slams abruptly into metal-to-metal contact, both in rearward and forward directions each time a round is fired, any braking by flesh accomplished after the slide impact transfers force to the frame.....

Hunter, just a couple more observations....firstly, if I hadn't bought the O1911, a plain Jane 19911 GM or S70 would have been the choice.....secondly, at close range, a Leroy thrown at an aggressor is almost as effective as a .45, but I'm curious as to how you handle carrying a Leroy concealed? I've tried that, and they tear me up, even after a carry melt (which they don't like AT ALL!).....
