Evening,
Please clarify the difference between the 70 & 80 and which is the preferred model. I am looking at a purchase of a customized 70 in the $875.00 range. Is that reasonable?

Thanks for the help, Jim

If I missed the welcome, may I say welcome to the forum.
Series 80 has a firing pin safety or block which is trigger activated.
I prefer the series 70 for most reasons but wouldn't object a series 80 as a carry gun since it might help to prevent accidental discharge due to the way it should prevent the firing pin from traveling forward.

Thank you for the response,
I may go ahead and pick this one up for my son. We have been sharing a LB PII at the range and we want to start into IDPA soon. The kid is 14 and 2" groups at 7. 15, & 25 yards are boring to him.
Is that a reasonable price for the Colt?

Thanks Jim

Two inch groups may be boring to me at 7 or 15 yards, but not 25 yards. Your son may have a furture.

What was done to the series 70 to customize it? A good price comparison is Buds, they have about the best prices I've seen.

That price might be good but a pic of the gun and knowledge of who did what to it with what result would be needed to give a better idea.

Welcome to the forum. I just converted two guns this afternoon from a series 80 to 70. The trigger pull seems to be less, I don't have the equipment to test the new pull but I like the new feel. You are moving fewer parts with the series 70 so resistance should be less.

As far as the price, you mentioned that it was customized. If you can trace the gunsmith and he is reliable and competent, then $800 is in the ballpark. I paid $825 for a Gold Cup National Match Series 80 that had been "customized", I didn't check who did the work. The gun went full auto on me after about 50 rounds. I got it fixed, luckily the gun shop did the work for me for free since I bought it from them.

Good luck, Sam

I think the series 80 parts amount to a couple levers in the frame and a plunger and small spring in the slide. Also a firing pin with a relief for the plunger.

I have both the series 70 & series 80. Both are fine pistols and mine have worked great. The trigger pull on both feel about the same, if anything the series 80 may be a little heavier, but not enough to really notice. I would not hesitate to purchase the series 80, there great, and if you don't like the safety features of the series 80, it can become a series 70 in about 10 minutes :D

Thank you all,
I will find out where the work was done and try to get a picture.
