Welcome to the forum. My suggestion is to purchase a new 1991 chambered in Super .38 and then send it off to Ken Crawley at Crawley Custom to have a Kart 9mm barrel fitted to the pistol. Then you can shoot either caliber you'd like and it will be more accurate than a production 9mm Colt. Crawley Custom is a sponsor of this site. You can access his website throught the ad link at the top of the page. I know him personally as he has done some work for me and he is both a stand up guy and excellent craftsmen.

An excellent idea, I did exactly that except that John Harrison did it for me. I could not be happier with the work. John is also a pleasure to deal with. I am sure you couldn't go wrong with either of these fine gentlemen.

that is a fantastic idea, but my goal is to get a 9mm to save money and still shoot the 1911.......see, I have this theory, the more 9mm I shoot, the more I save as opposed to .45 ammo; the more I save, the less the pistol costs me......

Colt is not currently manufacturing 9mm's, NICE older ones bring premium money from what I have seen.

Springfield makes one, as do Kimber and Para. Baer, STI and Rock River make higher dollar ones.

I saw your post in the Rock Island forum as well, I've heard that Ivan can get you a barrel for a very reasonable price and it will nearly drop in to an RIA Super 38. 9mm on the cheap, that is probably the way to go.

Also Nowlin makes a "Drop in Barrel", in the case of my Colt it did not "Drop In" but it might very well drop into another one.

Colt 9mms seem to be bringing a premium at the moment, and the Commanders seem more common than 5".

I come across them frequently on auction sites (such as Gunbroker.com or occasionally at Bud's Gun shop - they can track most anything down for you reasonably)! I've seen a few them on e bay but I trust the above ones more_Paul

Yes. If you live in an area with LOTS of gunshops then be preparred to shop for an older one in 9mm. A current Colt 38super (So going to 9mm) should not be that hard to find.

In my little part of gun heaven I can get new .45ACP for about the price of 9mm. Plus I am getting older and it is a lot easier to reload .45 than 9mm.

ThanksThere were a couple of full size Colt 9mm at the local gun show this past weekend...one was a NIB Series 80, the other an older Series 70 with no box but looked like it hadn't been shot. I like Justin's idea, only I'd get the Colt XSE Lightweight .38 Super Commander and put a 9mm barrel in yourself.

OVER THE HILL GUY.

thanks, guys, great info, all of you - I think I may (financially) have to go RIA .38 super plus barrel, although I prefer Colt, of course.....

.38 Super ammo is rarrer and pricier than 9mm but I'd take a Super over a 9mm ANY time!

9mm Commander deals can definitely be found on gunbroker if you have some time (and more patience than me ;)). There are currently a dozen+ available there with prices ranging from $600-$2000 (the higher priced one's being quite rare), depending on year and quality. The current average price (final auction sale price) that i've seen for 9mm Colt Commanders on GB is approx $850; for lightly used, box/papers maybe, pre-series 70, early series 80 models.

Here are a couple to look at :) (all "stock", all lightly used):

There are several NIB Commanders available as well.

Hope this helps.

.38 Super ammo is rarrer and pricier than 9mm but I'd take a Super over a 9mm ANY time!Well, I bought a .38 Super Colt XSE Lightweight Commander with the intent of converting it to 9mm. Even ordered a Kart E-Z Fit barrel. But then I shot the .38 Super. Wow! Liked it so much that I decided to leave the .38 Super as is and build a separate 9mm. So I can certainly agree with you!

Let me see if I have this right.....the more I shoot, the more I save, and the less my gun will cost me. Shucks, if I shoot this thing enough, my guns will all be free! :lm:

.............just kidding :)

hello and happy new year one question I can buy a 1911 series 70 in 9 mm.
What do you think about the 1911 in 9 mm. I have a gc in 45. The 9 mm is less expensive than the 45 in europe and we have a lot of cartridges in 9mm. I m french law enforcement and i use 9 mm in duty. Thank you

swat74, I love the 1911 in ANY caliber, and the 9mm would be great for your area because of ammo availability; same here for me as it's SO much cheaper in 9mm.....hopefully the show next week in Charlotte will yield some choice 9mm's or convertable 38 supers

HoBoBum

I like the idea of the conversion kits, .22 or 9mm or even carbine conversion.....the more versitile you make the Colt, the more fun....BUT , remember that sometimes the conversion kit may not be quite as reliable, but it's all for fun, so what the heck.....

The pre-series 80 in 9mm is an excellent gun and relatively rare here in the US. I'd absolutely recommend your buying one, if you have the opportunity, at a reasonable price!!!
It definitely makes sense additionally for you because of the use of the 9mm as your duty round.

Hope to see some pics of the new gun soon :).
