Quick question about the wrap around pachmayr grips for the 1911. The set i bought for my former series 70 colt. had this lil tail type thing sticking out towards the magwell. however i have seen pics of people who have them, that dont have the tail. Do you buy them that way? or do u cut the tail off once you buy the grips? I ask just because i dont like it, and it gets in the way of my shooting.

I have a set that I took off a used pistol. Mine has the "tail."

There are four or five different Pachmayr grips for the 1911, and some of them have the little finger rest (tail?), while some don't. The first pair that I bought, fifteen or more years ago, have thick thumbrests on both sides, and the little rest at the toe. Another pair has thumbrests, and no tail. Another is dished-out on the left, sort of a reverse thumbrest to improve access to the mag release, and they also have no tail. Others have no thumbrests, but are symmetrical, with no tail. I've seen others with finger grooves rather than checkering on the front, and I think they have no tail. In the '70s, it was popular to cut the frontstrap cover off altogether, in favor of metal checkering on the frame.

Jeeze why would they feel the need to make that many different types of grips for the same gun

If they still make them like they used to then I can attest to the fact they last a long time. Below is a pair I bought to put on a satin nickle Combat Commander in 1977 or so. When I traded it off on a little Detonics in 1984 I put them on an AMT Hardballer where they still reside, and they still look O.K.

I had bought a set of combat checkered grips for my new milspec and when I took them off to clean it the other day, I noticed that it had marked up my slide. Whatever the type of metal they use inside the grips to keep their form had started scratching into my frame. Needless to say I don't use them anymore. I'm thinking of getting the ALS grips as it looks more like the wood that gives the support and makes contact with the frame, thereby avoiding my issue. I still have the grips if anyone is interested.
