Ok i am a slightly above average hobbiest who likes to build model cars and things of that sort. I recently thought that my Kimber warrior's grips would look great in black... but you can't find that style in black... I venture over to hobby lobby to see what I might be able to do and they have a silicone rubber kit that you mix up your own rubber to make molds with. I was wondering if anybody knew of which type of plastic i could use or if just any old plastic for hobby purposes that can be mixed at home will be usable on a pistol. They do have the black die for the plastic so it would actually be black plastic instead of just painted. if anybody else has tried this let me know how it came out...

Some body used to this, and sell the resulting products on E-Bay. Don't know if they are still there or not, as I have shunned E-Bay since they quit listing gun parts.
They offered grips for all kinds of pistols, in all kinds of finishes and colors. Some of them were cast from molds made from original grips. They even offered a dark purple Gov't model grip.
Though I was tempted by the purple, I never bought any, and don't know how rugged they are. Seems like you are on the right track, though. Sounds like fun, and if I did not have so many other irons in the fire I would try it myself. Keep us informed of your progress.

I purchased this kit from a local hobby lobby. (http://www.caswellplating.com/aids/alumilite.html) I'll post pics of the process I used and finished product in a new thread... Maybe I'll do step by step as I go. I don't know but I bought black die and red die... so I'll make two sets this aught to be fun.

Remember good ventilation. Face mask, etc. while you are exploring.
