Ok, I have a Taurus PT1911. I want to put in a C&S hammer. Looking at the website, the hammer doesn't come with a hammer strut or pin. Looking at my old hammer, it looks like the pin is stake in there. Questions?

Can I use the old strut and pin? ( I'm assumming not, but want an experienced persons' advice)

I assume I can order a new strut. Special pin also?

I assume I should stake my new one if I got it?

Thanks for your help!

As long as both are in good shape, there's no reason why you can't reuse them.

You might want to check that hammer carefully ! The Taurus 1911 has a safety device built into the hammer .....if I am thinking of the correct model.

If so.......... normal 1911 replacement parts will NOT fit . You must replace a whole bunch of parts in order to get the pistol functioning correctly.

Please disregard if I have the model mixed up

Outstanding! Another JMB model modified to shreds! Can't manufacturers just make/build 'em like they are supposed to be made? Guess that's asking too much!

you can knock out a staked-in pin with some good effort. it might be locked with something like Loctite, or staked with Loctite, in which case it'll need some heating before it'll come loose.

really, though, you can get a new strut and pin for less than $10, and they're easy enough to assemble, especially with Loctite-or-something. just don't be a doofus like me and curse for a few minutes 'till you realized the strut was backwards! as a bonus, you can leave the old hammer and strut assembled for a backup (or sell 'em).

You are half right. There is a safety built into the hammer. But, you can swap it out with a standard hammer.

Has anyone ever had a problem with a loose (unstaked) hammer strut pin? In other words, will the pistol function properly with a loose pin?

I have heard of problems from a loose pin. When something goes wrong, it seems to be always at the worst possible time. For a carry/duty gun, it can be suicide.

To top it off - besides the removal and reinstall of the hammer, which is easy, the fix is trivial.

What sort of problems? I am too shiftless to disassemble a pistol and look, but if memory serves, the pin is pretty much captured in place by the frame - or is it? Maybe I should just go look for myself. :-)

Well, I just removed a couple of thumb safeties, for better vision, and found no areea that stood out for a hard jam. So, guess I was wrong.

It won't jam, maybe, but the hammer strut wont push the hammer to strike the firing pin when you pull the trigger.
