View Full Version : 1911 rear sight installation question

I have installed many fixed rear sights using a brass punch and hammer. I decided to join 20th century and buy an MGW rear sight tool.

One odd thing though, I've always been told that removing is drive from left to right, (with slide muzzle end pointing away) and install driving right to left. The MGW say left to right for removal AND installation. This just doesn't sound right. Does this ring a bell with anybody?
TIA

Maybe for their sights, otherwise I disagree with MGW's recommendation.

I always go left to right for removal and right to left for installation. Although over the years I have bumped into some very wild dovetails, that it really wouldn't have made much difference which way was used. My understanding is the dovetail is actually suppose to be a straight cut, no taper. The rearsight should be oversize enough to allow file fitting to lightight, and extremely snug fit.
Please don't tell my favorite brass punch that they now have a special gunsmithing tool to take his place.

Removal is left to right, when looking at the rear of the slide.
