I just opened up my new S&W PD1911 for cleaning and discovered the following circular gouges in the slide body. The rings start to fade towards the back. Looks like some circular stamp or press when down it. Sorry for the blurring, but its the best I've got at the moment.

I've just bought it, did a quick light oil on the barrel and rails before heading to the range to put 100 rds. through it. I am getting some casing in my forehead (I'm just thinking it's needs some break-in), but there were no FTE or FTF, the performance was good.
This may seem a silly question, but should I send this back to S&W?

It is a solely a fit and finish issue as long as the disconnector rail is not rough. If it is rough then you can smooth it yourself as long as it isn't to deep. The only problem function wise is that it might slow the slide down and wear the disconnector early. You could send it back and they would probably replace the slide since it is a new gun and their customer service is excellent.

Those are machine marks from the milling of the slide with an end mill. Like Kel said, they'll make the pistol feel rough when you cycle it but aren't a problem unless they are really deep.

...The only problem function wise is that it might slow the slide down and wear the disconnector early...

Could the slow slide be the cause of the ejecting brass to the forehead?

I doubt it but S&W will probably replace it for you anyway.

Got a new digital camera so I thought I'd post new pictures of the tool marked receiver. S&W has sent me a UPS 1day mailer to send them the Gunsite. Now if I can just get a weekday at home (I fly out on Monday morings and don't get back until Friday nights. I've noticed that the receiver is harder to pull and back, so until I can get it shipped to S&W this will have to become a safe-queen.

Looks like a steel chip or a dull or broken end mill...or both. Like Dave said...Unless it's really deep and rough, it won't really hurt anything unless the disconnect is super-soft.
