I've just started to build my first 1911. I just bought an Essex frame to build on. Before I hear anymore, I was already harshly criticized on another forum for making that choice so please be gentile.

I'm looking for a slide, but don't know the best priced place to buy one. I haven't decided between Caspian or STI yet. From what I've seen they run about the same price.

I'd really like a "Commander" style slide with Novak cuts in it.

Check out Brownells (see the banner at the top of this page). They sell Caspian, STI and Les Baer slides. However, I don't believe that a Commander size slide will work on a full size frame -- at least without modification to the frame.

I can attest that an Essex Commander slide works on an Armscor full-size receiver ...

A Commander slide can work on a Government frame. As long as your gunsmith is worth his files, it shouldn't be a problem.
