I am trying to build a period correct 1911A1. I have a 1945 Ithaca frame and have obtained an Ithaca slide. The barrel I currently have is (as nearly as I can tell) a Colt "Transition" or 1924 barrel that was originally in a Colt with serial number between 700001 and 710000. The frame has the marks of a Rock Island Armory rebuild. Is there any chance they might have put this barrel in the gun when they rebuilt it?

Or is this barrel so rare that I should try to find someone with a Colt of the appropriate serial number range and sell and buy or trade into a High Standard, Springfield, or Franklin barrel like the gun probably had originally?

I know my gun will NOT be an "original," and I would never claim it to be so. I'm just trying to assemble a gun with the correct parts for the period.

Thanks for your help and/or advice.

Doug

A Transition barrel makes good trading stock. You might get a barrel and several other parts you need from the right person.

Doug: I look forward to meeting with you in the next 2-3 weeks. I was nice speaking with you today.
The chances of the 1924 barrel being used in a rebuild by the arsenal is pretty slim, unless the barrel is refinished. Yes, it is possible...but not likely a barrel that old would have gone back into a pistol at the arsenal without being refinished.
Your 1945 Ithaca almost surely came with a Flannery Bolt barrel when it was shipped new from the factory.
I agree with Doran about your barrel being good trade stock if it's in good condition.
Best regards,
Scott
