Looking to purchase a 1918 (4++,xxx ser#) Colt, and it is in marvelous condition except for replaced grips, but, the barrel has "HP" over the chamber and the "P" overlaps the right vertical of the "H". No other apparent marks but either a "K' w/o the vertical or broad arrow w/o the shaft (don't know which) in front of link support. Is it a period original barrel or a replacement? Any insights? Thanks.

Interlaced 'HP' is correct for 1918 M1911 S/N 4XX,XXX.

Go to www.coolgunsite.com , select ID pages and click on Barrels. You will find your exact barrel with the interlaced HP on top and the K in front of the link support in pictures. According to this site, the barrel is 1924 production, originally used on serial #700001 to 710000. This would imply that it is a replacement barrel originally on a newer gun.
BUT, please know that I am no expert and, while coolgunsite seems authoritative, I don't know how accurate they really are.
Please, does anyone else have more knowledge of this site's accuracy?
Thanks,
Doug
