Hi. I've already posted this question on another forum,so if you already read it there please forgive me.
I have a new Series 70. It has the problem of the slide stop lever walking out from the frame mid-cycle. The stop pops out part-way and binds up the slide. I've heard of a problem when round nose ammo causes the slide to lock back mid-mag, but this is different. Any thoughts as to diagnosis and prevention?

My only thought is the slide stop is defective. If you can push the slide stop out without aligning the disassembly notch, the slide stop is bad. Otherwise I can't think of a way it will walk out.

Hi Pony-Up: Welcome to the forum. All you need to know about the 1911 is available here. Glad to have you aboard!

Remove slide and barrel from receiver and re-install the slide stop. Load a 230gn JRN cartridge in a magazine and slowly insert the magazine while looking between the side of the bullet and that part of the slide stop inside the magazine well. There should be no contact between the two if the cartidge is fully aft in the magazine.

Is there any contact?

Headhog was thinking lots better than I was one this one. The top aft part of the slide stop should have two tabs with a groove between them. The inner-most tab should be higher than the other. The higher one fits through the disassembly notch in the slide. If it's not taller, that's your problem - thanks to Headhog. Cheers

Are you a left handed shooter like MEEEE!!! If so what grip are you using? If you are using a thumbs forward style grip it is possible that you are putting enough pressure on the slide stop pin to push it out

Thanks for the replies. I am not left-handed, but I do rest my finger there. I don't think that is the problem because this happens during the weapon cycling. My slide stop is not defective as far as I can tell, though the bearing surface for the plunger is polished smooth. I've narrowed the problem down to a magazine that was a little bent-in at the top. Perhaps the plastic follower was sliding to the side of the stop instead of seating the lever from underneath. I've bent back the mag and filed a detent in the stop to prevent this kind of malfuntion from happening again. After 200 rounds, it seems o.k.
