My grandfather, a retired Army Col. who served at Pearl Harbor and Korea, recently passed away. His service pistol, a 1911 from the 1940s was willed to me. Towards the end of his life, he suffered depression and was in fear of having the firearm around and asked someone to "hold it for him". This person says he turned it in to the sheriff's office and that's that. My question is: Is there a way to track/recover serial numbers? Is there anything I can do to try to recover/report Pappy's gun? He taught me and instilled the values of respect with the one weapon that truly saved his life. It was the only item specifically noted in the will. Please help.

The hunt for a paper trail should start with the person who turned the gun in to the Sheriff's Office. A property receipt would have been issued to them. The second step should be to take a copy of the will to the Sheriff's Dept or send a copy with an inquiry to ascertain if the gun was turned in and if the Sheriff's Office still has the gun in their possession.
Also the Army may have a record of the gun issued to the Colonel.

Oh, god.........Good luck?
As for record DD2O1 file is where I would start...As for a pistol. That would be a hand reciet from supply SGT....Trust me that's long gone.
Good luck..............
