Not only am I new to the forum, I am new to the world of 1911's and especially green to the Colt Universe. So before I asked any questions I wanted to say hello to all and thanks in advance for all the knowledge I have already gained from reading here and from all that I am sure I will gain in the future...

That being said, I do own a Kimber and I recently came across a full size Colt that was offered to me. I wanted to see if this was a good deal or not. I recognize there is an entire world of fix-up, customization and modification, but I am not there yet. I want to see about the gun I was offered and ask what you all think.

1. Markings - It says Government Model on the side on the side really small above the serial number.
2. The weapon has the standard trigger, grip safety and hammer but it does have an adjustable sight on the back with a high and permanent front site
3. Instead of checkering it has a a texture surface on the back and the front that looks like the peel of an orange.
4. I have no idea the year it was made. Is there a way to find that out from the serial number or any other way?
5. Their is some very minor rusting on the outside of the weapon

Here are my questions:
1. From the description and photos, does anyone have a clue what I am dealing with?
2. What seems like a reasonable price to pay for this weapon? I know it would likely be a project gun, so I don't want to pay too much, but I dont know what it reasonable.

Redneckerson:

Post a couple of pic's; that will help a great deal. I don't know of any Colt that ever came w/ a stippled foregrip, so between that & what you wrote about the sights, the pistol has been modified. If you can't post a pic, post all the markings (sans the serial# of course :D) you can find on the pistol.

Stippling is not factory........somebody did work on this pistol, may add value to the gun. With the serial # somebody on this site will be able to tell you exactly when it was manufactured.....just X-out the last three digits. The slide should be able to give you an idea as to age and model, also. So......post pics and list the serial #. Also, tell us what the barrel says or post pic. How much do they want for it?
