I'm looking at an armory rebuilt 1911A1 with a US&S slide and a Remington Rand frame. The entire thing has been refinished (blued). The other kicker is that the grip safety, thumb safety, slide stop, trigger and hammer have all been nickel plated. I've been told the value should probably be around $400 bucks. Anyone have some insight??

Thanks!

My thought is that because it's a parts gun, it'll be worth whatever anyone is willing to pay for it.

Just make sure you look under the hood before you buy, to make sure it's running right........i.e. barrel lug wear etc.

Rather than pay $400 for what you are describing (a mis-matched, improperly refinished shooter), I would opt for a modern production SA or such as a shooter. The SA would look a whole lot better, surely function and probably have a warranty.
Yes, it might cost a little more, but not much more.

If you want to stick strictly with USGI stuff, which I would, then I'd opt to spend more to buy something that not only will look good, but retain it's value. That might involve spending $750-1000. But at least you'd have something that was more of an investment, that if you got ready to sell it, it would probably retain all it's value.

When you consider the difference in price for what you get, it's worth it to spend a little more.

The key to coming out okay when you sell is to buy the right stuff in the first place. Good luck.

BTW, I can assure you the pistol you are describing did not leave a military arsenal that way. It may have been mismatched a half dozen times since it left the military. The finish you describe was never used by the military. It's what I'd call a Bubba Deluxe.

No kidding!! I saw the thing and knew someone got a little wild with it. It appears that it probably had some surface rust on it before it was refinished. I'm kind of torn a little because I'm really not much of a collector but that might get me in the mood. An aquaintance got it from her nephew's place after he passed away and either I buy it or it potentially gets destroyed because they do not have any desire to keep it.

From a mechanical standpoint, everything looks well. I'm not a gunsmith but do have a long history with guns and mechanics.

Is $400 too much or about right for a gun in this condition? She has ABSOLUTELY no clue about guns and I'm a newbie when it comes to the Govt 1911 market. I want to make sure I'm giving her a fair price for the quality of the gun.

Thanks for all the help!!

If you want to take good care of your friend, load her and the pistol up in the car and go to 2-3 gun shops, or a gun show. I'd recommend a gun show because you get a lot more exposure. Shop the pistol around with her. You can then make an informed decision about what the going price is. One guy may will willing to pay a lot more than the others.
But it's impossible to shop the value of a pistol with people who have never seen it. You'll make a lot more headway shopping it face to face. Anybody here on the board can say it's worth $XXX, but that doesn't mean anything. Put the pistol in front of somebody and let them put their money where their mouth is. That's how you find out what something's worth.

.

Just to add- If nobody wants it for a fair price (as a shooter ) ,
Have it totally Stripped and Parkerized - then at least it will Look
like a GI gun. ;)
