1911 USMC Serial Numbers

I recently read an article in either "The Rampant Colt", "Man at Arms", or "The Gun Report" on the discovery of serial numbers of WWI-era 1911s sold or assigned to the USMC that were not previously known. Unfortunately I cannot remember the publication. Does anyone remember the article and can you refer me to the correct publication and date. Thank you. Regards, Richard
