View Full Version : What's a good price for a 1991 blued commander?

Due to quite a bit of searching for information, and finally deciding (for the moment) that i think i might probably want a 1991 series in commander length, i called up the local Gander Mountain and asked them to price one for me. For those of you waiting for the punch line, here it is: They said in order to buy a Colt 1991 Series Blued in Commander length, it would cost me 1000 dollars. Now, i'm not expert on this particular model, but as far as i can tell, this price is probably something like 300 dollars overpriced though of course i could be wrong. Could someone please tell me what a good average price for one of these NIB may be, and also if there is an online resource where i may find such an item (i couldn't seem to find it on budsgunshop), that information would also be useful. Thanks in advance.

Hi
My Commander shows "Series 80" and "Colt's Commander Model" roll marks on it. It is a 1991. I don't remember it ever being described as a 1991 Commander. That may be why you are having trouble finding one. The Colt web page shows it as model O4691 and lists it under the 1991 heading.
A price of $700 would be pretty amazing on an over the counter transaction on this pistol. I believe I paid right about $800 for this one. My guess is that even Gander Mountain would sell a non-special order version for under $900. They do buy pistols from several sources, you might send them back to call a couple other distributors.

A little over 4 months ago I bought one for $750 from a gunstore in the Southwest. I know prices have gone up since then. I have been busy with my job and haven't even been to a gunstore in a month.

The last time I priced one, cost on a Colt O4691 was below $700 (and they had them in stock) so Gander Mountain should be able to sell you one for a lot less than $1,000 and still make a fair profit. Almost sounds like they didn't want to fool with doing a special order!

Buds Has the Stainless XSE for $820.00 with no Blue in Stock http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php/cPath/21_141
The MSRP on Gallery of Guns is .$786.00 for a Blued 1911A1 1991A1, which are in stock. You can usually get them a bit cheaper at local FFL'S which a search on this site will provide you.http://www.galleryofguns.com/GunLocator/locatorStartMfg.asp?onlyMfg=Colt

1000$ is outrageous for a current-production model Colt 04691!
Here's one on gunbroker, from a very highly reputable dealer (whom i'd buy from without question) for $685 with zero bids and one day left on the auction.
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=84145736
My guess is that it could be yours for that price. I've had very good luck with that site; they're like ebay in that they "guarantee" all the sales (i.e., if you get ripped off, they pay!). You can view the "seller's" history....this particular seller has 1236, A+ positive sales. That's as good as it gets ;).
Here's another new one with a "BUY NOW" price of $739:
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=84872625
...And another with a BN price of $775:
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=84991792
With shipping on the most expensive of the bunch, and FFL fees, you'd still probably come in around $825 max. I'd go for the $685 one! Let us know how you do please ;)!

With regards to model, there are basically three different types of series 80 Commanders:
1) The early, pre-1991 models, like this ;)...sorry, can't resist :o!
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u311/elijdub/001-4.jpg
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u311/elijdub/008-1.jpg
2) The ORM Commander (which is parkerized)
3) The NRM Commander, which is commonly called a "1991" as it's viewed on their site under that heading and was developed/produced in the same model grouping, though it's technically not the 01991 model; it's an 04691 model Commander as stated above.

I just ordered one from my FFL guy for $690 last week, and have seen them on Bud's for $686.84 shipped...but they go pretty fast. I personally would talk to a few small FFL guys to see if they can get you one for a good deal. Good Luck.

elijdub should be the "go to guy" for gun deals. He found me a great NIB Series 80, Colt Commanding Officer, a few weeks ago. It's folks like him who put forth that extra effort to assist others, that make this site worthwhile!

Thank you Rich for those very kind words.
I enjoy "searching" for deals on the online sites, etc., and it's nice to able to present such a deal to a fellow forum member. I've learned SO MUCH, and benefited in so many ways, from this site...just my small way of giving back ;).

A few dealers are having trouble getting the # 04691 in. My guy down in Florida has been trying to get one from RSR (?) with no luck. I like doing business with this dealer so I guess I can wait a while longer.....
I am like a crazed animal trying to get my first Colt. Have even been loading up on the .45 ammo to help feed the new Pony.

I appreciate loyalty, please don't get me wrong, but there are tons of 'em out there. There's a dealer here on the forum that i'm sure could find one in a day or two. PM me for his info if you want.

Elijdub, well I have read that you are the go to guy for finding deals on guns around here! :)
Yeah, RSR is a distributor and I usually use a guy down in FLA (dealer) to ship my guns to my FFL dealer. My FLA dealer really checks the gun out before shipping it. He mentioned to me that RSR did have a bunch in stock, its just that they were earmarked for May/June orders being shipped to Canada......

:D :D :D!!! That was a moniker given me by Rich-D ;) after i helped him find a Commanding Officer on gunbroker.
As i said in my PM to you, i've found the forum to be so incredibly helpful and have gleaned soooo much info and assisstance from others, that it's my own little way of giving back. I spend time on gunbroker looking for deals and sorta' keep in the back of my mind who, over here, is looking for what. I've posted a few 04691's that i found this morning. GB is a good place to buy. IIRC, they are the only online auction that guarantees the transaction, IOW, if you get burned by a seller they reimburse you (i think...though please don't quote me on that, and i'll look into that fact further).
EDIT to include researched info about GB: http://gunbroker.com/User/BuyerProtection.asp
They reimburse up to $500 with a $100 deductible in the unlikely event of fraud.
You may want to check these out:
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=85993375 (this may be an ORM but i can't tell from the pics. It's a solid price, IMO, and the auction is ending in a few hours).
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=86157347 (i like this one! you can "Buy Now" for 700$, which means that with shipping and FFL you're probably looking at $750 total....Hard to beat!!!)
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=85215563 (another winner, reasonably priced)
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=86052571 (if you felt like bidding you might get a price on this one)
http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=85936092 (another good one...and i posted it just to give you an idea of their current market value)
Hope this helps! ...And let us know what you come up with!

Yeah, and some folks at gunshops claim either:
1) No one wants to buy Colt, or
2) Colt is out of business
Seems to me the only problem they're having in Hartford is producing enough to meet demand!

Most of my Colt's have been from Bud's and Dan. I bought a used Python locally once. I will look at the displays when I am out and you really have to hunt for a Colt, if there is one to be found. I don't even want to talk about the price they want to charge. It's always several hundred more than Bud's or AJC Sports. Colt makes quite a few new pistols each year, I wonder why they never seem to be where I am.

While there are a few States that require "tax", most don't (in my understanding)... So the price stated is the price you pay, PLUS shipping and FFL fees on your end.
The last several times i've paid shipping it's been in the area of $25-40. And my FFL charges $35 to transfer the gun to my name once it arrives in their shop. I usually count on an additional $60-100 to purchase a gun online/from out-of-state.
Hope this helps

When you find what you are interested in, select the "Order Online" button and enter the zip code for your area. You should see bids from 3 dealers in your area and pricing can differ so try a couple of your closest zip codes to find the best deal.
The "BID" will include transfer, shipping and tax.

Hi
In most states, you owe sales tax on online purchases. If you ever wonder about that, just call up the tax office and ask them. I'm *sure* you can trust the answer they give you. :D :D :D Here in PA you are expected to total up your purchases and send in a check at the end of the year.

I buy from gunbroker mostly. I've bought guns from CA, WI, CT, and others, and have never been charged sales tax. Maybe someone's cheatin' ;). Jeez, i hope i don't owe a bunch of money to a bunch of States :scared: ;) .

I think a lot if it has to do with how the transaction is handled. With Davidson's, you only pay a deposit up front and then the deal is finalized through your local dealer so it is subject to your local taxes. When I buy through Impactguns, the entire transaction (except transfer fee) is done out of state and I am not charged tax.

Well, gents (and gals) I had some brief downtime this afternoon (was on the road) so I pulled out the computer to do some emails, etc. For the heck of it I logged onto Bud's website and what did I see?? They had some 1991 Series 80 Commanders (#04691) back in stock.
I gave them a call to confirm and they had just received a few in late yesterday. I placed an order for their last one and it should be in late next week ! :D
Earlier in the day I did check with another local dealer (Firearms' Guild) and he tried 2 large distributors and was told they had none in stock. The guns are out there just in short supply, I guess.

Thanks everyone. Yep, pretty anxious for it to come and will take some pics.
I have always wanted a Colt 1911 (along with a blued Python), and will take pride in this gun. I own a few 1911's from some of the better know semi-custom makers, but pride of ownership will be with the Colt. Its the brand that started it all and I really sense some of that "old world" craftsmanship in these Colts.
Kinda sappy, but that's it.
