View Full Version : Grips for a "blocky"

I've got an older "blocky" framed Mil-Spec and was wondering if anyone might
know what grips would give me the most coverage since the flat portion of the grip frame is bigger than a normal 1911.

I'm not picky, any quality wooden checkered grips will suffice.

P.S. If a mod sees this and thinks that I would do better posting under the the parts section, feel free to delete this and I'll repost there.

Thanks

Normally questions about grips would go under "Parts - Grips" but in this case it's a specific problem relating to a specific Springfield model, so I think it's okay here.

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. You might consider contacting some of our grip-maker sponsors to ask if they can make you a set that's just a little wider than the norm. Unless they work from pre-cut blanks, it shouldn't be a problem (I would think -- in my naivete of never having attempted grip making).

You've got Linville, Esmeralda, VZ Grips, AlumaGrips to chhose from, as well as GunGrips.net. Out of all those, I'd think somebody can help you out.

What you mean by blocky? You mean the frames with the more square front strap and dust cover? If so, then the standard grip panels will do, there is nothing else in the market for these guns.

Thanks Hawk. I'll check them out.

John,

Yes, that is exactly the frame that I am talking about. I'm sure that there is probably nothing made for this particular frame, but grips in general seem to differ in size quite a bit. The platic GI style grips that came with it leave a much larger gap between the grip edge and the front radius of the frame than a set of wooden double diamonds I have. Since this gap is much larger on an old SA than the average 1911 I was just wondering if anyone has found something that really closes that gap as much as possible.

Thanks again.

Nope, nothing special in the market, sorry!

Yes John, as I stated in my previous post I realize that there is nothing special in the market for this gun, but you can't possibly deny that some grips have differing widths (not thickness mind you). I am asking for a grip with a very wide width, and thought that owners of SA's with the older style frames might be able to help me out.

I thought this might be a common issue, but maybe I should just look through the "show off your SA's" sticky and start contacting posters.

Thanks

I know this isn't exactly the answer you are looking for, but it was cheap, and it worked very well...

So you ... recontoured that frame by hand??? Man you are much more brave than I am.
