View Full Version : Magazines for '70 GCNM

Sorry if this is a repost, but nothing came up under "search". So...
Can I get some suggestions for magazines for a series 70 GCNM, and equally important: where's a good place to get them? I'm guessing original Colt is always a safe bet, but I've read a few threads on "fake Colt mags". Are there any online stores that members have used, and can verify authentic mags, etc.
This will be for conceal carry, so reliability is the biggest factor, not cost.
Thanks!

I've got an 80 series GCNM and bought Wilson 47Ds for it, very happy with them. I usually buy from MidWay because I have a C&R FFL, and they offer a discount.

If you want Colt marked magazines I'd suggest Brownell's. There's a banner at the top right of this page you can click on to get to their site. In my GCNM's I use CheckMate, Wilson, Les Baer & McCormick mags mostly.

You might want to take a look at Checkmate's Hybrid style 1911 magazines. They have gotten very good reviews in the "Magazine" section of the forum.

You can find them at: http://www.checkmateindustries.com/handgun.htm#tbl1
I have several of the CM45-S-H and they have performed very well.

Does CheckMate make the Colt mags??Here's a thread that has a lot of info. Read though the posts for the list of vendors:

I would also caution you on Metalform mags due to poor welds. I had a brand new one fall apart at the range and emailed Metalform, but never got a reply. I called Colt and they replaced it with a new Checkmate for free.

I recently purchased a number of genuine Colt 7 rd magazines from Brownells. They are the real mags. Colt Manufacturing recommended Brownells. The only disadvantage is the cost of $26 each.
The hybrid feed lips on the 7 rounders are what you want. Checkmate made the mags for Colt that I received, a "C" stamp on the mag. Checkmate also makes their own mags with the hybrid feed lips in both 7 round and 8 round.
The hybrid feed lips make a big, big difference for reliable feeding.
Note: the genuine Colt 8 round magazines do not have hybrid feed lips. They have wadcutter style feed lips. These did not work well in my GCNM and I sent them back to Brownells and traded for 7 rounders. I am not a fan of any 8 rounders that I have experienced to date.
Metalform (an "M" stamp) and OKAY Industries (an "O" stamp) also make mags for Colt. Personally, I like the Colt Metalform a little bit better than the Colt Check Mates.

go to cdnninvestments.com or brownells.com. "ANY" 1911 magazine they sell will fit your gun if your gun is a 1911. If it won't fit, they will cheerfully refund your money. Can't imagine it won't if you have a 1911 made by Colt, SA, Ithaca, Armscor, Wilson, Rock Island, etc.
All manufacturers make their guns to fit around the same magazines. All magazine makers make their magazines to the same spec.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone.
From what I've read, Wilson seems to be the benchmark when it comes to magazines, but that have that mag pad on the bottom of all their 7 rounders that protrudes to the front and then up. It looks like it will interfere with my hogue wrap around grips. Are these bump stops removable, and is what's underneath a flat plate like a Colt factory 7 round mag?
