New to 1911's

I am in the market for a 1911 and think I have decided on a S&W. What are the pros and cons to them? I see them for sale on Gun broker all the time for about $700. I am the type to upgrade wherever I can so should I look for a Mil Spec gun? This will be for recreational shooting and home protection. Any suggestions on getting me into a 1911 as cost effective as possible would be greatly appreciated. Oh yea, Great site you guys have here. Keep it up!!

S7W is a good gun out of the box...but if your gonna do any up grades, S&W has a few issues in that respect...so if your gonna do alot of up grades I would stick to a mil spec
