Does colt currently make a gold cup trophy or special combat govt model in all stainless?(Frame&slide). If not what would be your choice for a ss 1911 for under $1500? I like the looks of the XSE govt model, anyone have any oppinions on this pistol? Lookin for a fullsize 5" bbl.

Grew up shootin a nickel series 70 govt and want a more durable finish. Tryin to stick with colt. :)

You can get most Colt's with a stainless finish. Even a super 38 pimp gun, with a bright stainless finish. Here is the Colt page with their offerings.

Here is a link to a Gold Cup.

The Special Combat Government comes in two tone, the receiver is nickel and the slide is blue. The other is a hard chrome only version. The Special Combat Government doesn't come in stainless.

They do make the Gold Cup Trophy in all SS, but the Special Combat Gov. is Hard Chrome (or blued and satin SS).

You should be able to find either for under $1500. The XSE is also very good, although it does not have adjustable sights, which begs the question; what do you want? Since you want all SS, then that would rule out the new Special Combat Gov. So do you want adjust. sights, then Gold Cup, or front cocking serrations, then XSE. I discount FLGR's as they are easily changed, like grips.

In my humble opinion, the Colt Gold Cup is one of the best deals in 1911 land right now.

Would it be easy to switch the sights to a novak style and put on an arched MSH for the gold cup? Or would i need to have a gunsmith do this? ..In that case ill send it back to colt.

However i believe the back of the slide is milled special for the bomar/champion sights. Wouldnt it make it look goofy?

ronniev,
It sounds like you're leaning towards the XSE....prefering the Novak's, etc. Though i've never owned one, a GCT seems like a phenominal choice, but, while others will disagree, i think it's sorta' specific in it's purpose. Sure it can be carried, etc., but i think it's a target/competition gun first and foremost. If you're after a gun with Novak's i'd just go for the XSE...or maybe get a SS 1991 and have the "model O" package done to it. You'd end up with the same gun without the front cocking serrations or extended thumb safety, but with and better (upswept instead of "ducktail") grip-safety (IMO) and a dehorn(!). ...Personal preference
Hope this helps!

Oh, BTW, you can definitely do the MSH "swap" yourself. Here's a link to a thread i started that details the process:

I personally wouldn't do "sights" myself. I'm not sure about SS, but with blue'd guns, often some re-finishing has to be done (i guess the area around the sights gets a little messed up). You'd need to look into the dovetail sizes, etc., or ask someone here on the forum if they'd be the correct sized match.

Let us know what you end up doing!

I would have to give special consideration to the GCT. I have no personal exerience with the SCG models but they do look nice. XSE is an exceptional pistol and I would not hesitate to pick recommend them to you. Just decide upon which features you like better and get one. Remember, if it says Colt its good stuff.
