I recently obtained this MK IV Series 70 government .38 Super in trade for a used Glock 22 .40 cal. I love this gun, but I do not know anything about its origin, or of its value. If anyone can help, that would be great. It has Colts PT.F.A. MFG. CO. Hartford Conn. U.S.A. on the r side of the slide. It also has 70S 19764 on the r side above the trigger. On the l side of the slide it lists the series and caliber and government model. There is a faint B in front of the l side of the trigger and a strange looking P inside a triangle on the same side of the trigger in the gaurd area of the frame. Here is a pic:

If anyone knows, please give me some background on this gun, and please tell me it is worth more than the Glock, and that I did not get taken!!!

Welcome to the forum!

First of all, any Colt is worth more than a Glock, even if its been thru a chop saw!

Your Colt was made in 1975, if its in excellent condition.........looks good, but the pic is a bit dark..........its worth around 600

I guess the southeast is different in pricing. 600 here gets you a 80% parts gun thats been drug behind the truck, then used for a hammer. Around here,I would say,if in 95%, 750 minimum. 2 examples here are, LNIB with box and papers,999.$....Satin nickel,95% ,no box, 895.$

You would tend to see some regional difference in price. If your interested in the "retail" (rest assured in the Glock trade you came out way ahead) value, grade it according to the NRA guidelines and check some official sources that usually use a good aggregate to determine value.

More importantly, have you shot the thing yet?!? :D

Thanks guys,
Yes, I have shot the gun, and it is sooo much sweeter than the GLock. It has only one very small spot on the slide at the nose of the gun where the blueing is worn. The gun is in excellant condition, but a local gun shop told me it was worth $400 because it was .38 Super, and not .45 ACP, but he was falling all over himself to buy it, so I knew he had to be lying. The first time I shot it, I emptied every shot into the 2 center rings of a target at 15 - 25 yds (backyard guesstimate). I just wanted to be sure I did not get taken. The gun is very smooth, and balanced, and the .38 Super is a much hotter round (have only been able to find +P's) than the .40 of the Glock. I really like this gun.

It probably is worth a little more than a .45. It really sickens me how a good percentage of gun store commandos act. Its either they are so pitifully unknowledgable or out right liars. Your commando would love to buy your .38 for 400.$. It would be on Gun Broker the same day for 1000.$, with him raving how rare and wonderful it is......

I would like to say! you got one heck of a deal! I just purchased a New MK4/series 80 in .38 super and paid 769 for it! I'm sure I over paid, but it is my understanding that colt dropped this model from there catalog! Also it seems to me that most gezzers at gun stores have the attitude that if you own it its not worth anything and if they own it its as rare as the hope diamond or somthing! Enjoy you got rid of a plastic gun and got a quality steel gun!!! :D

Must be a regional thing, as I continually see Series 70's in the 6-700 range.

But that aside, you got one great deal. I would give 2 Glocks for a Colt in that shape!

Exchanging a Tupperware for a Colt 1911 is a devine act. I am sure JMB will be smiling happy up there!

If you traded a Glock for that, you should really have a hard time sleeping at night :D In all seriousness, here in Tenn. you would be paying more in the neighborhood of what paul45 has already stated. Consider yourself fortunate.

I would trade my Glock 32 any time for a pistol like that even though I do like it. They are a dime a dozen compared to your fine example of a series 70, .38 super.

Super trade in my opinion.

With kind regards,

CHuck

I cant help but give an update.A buddy of mine is at a gunshow in Fayetteville as I write this .He called and of course I made him give me all the scoop on whatever Colts he saw there. He did see a series 70 .38 super there that he said was very nice for 895.$....OUCH!! What got his blood boiling was a supposed 95% blue Delta for 650.$ and they said they would nogotiate.....Doggone it!! He nor I are ready with the cash or NC permits!

paul45:

I wonder if I could make it to NC before the shows over! :D

Regarding one of your earlier posts, all .38 Super ammo will have a +P on the headstamp. It's an effort to further differentiate it from the .38 ACP and keep folks from accidentially rolling Super ammo through one of Colt's turn of the century .38 Autos.

Dang, a blue Delta for $650 OBO...aargghh.

I haven't seen a Delta that low in price since they first came out..........

The last one I saw at a gun show, they wanted 1,200.........it was 98% or better.......OUCH!

Thanks Larry!, but unfortunately I was waxing poetic due to more than just being physically far away... Due to a surprisingly LARGE tax bill, I also had to pass on a great deal for a fairly rare AMT 1911 posted for sale on this very forum.

Likely I'll be out of the buying game for a few months. I can't even post what my wife said when I pitched her on the Delta.....

Thanks again,

Kinda figured :D, doesn't change the request for pics though...

I recently purchased a 9mm Commander, but I'd be interested in what the gentleman in question wants for the LW.
