I was reading the Pre- WWII Commercial forum when I noticed this thread- http://forum.m1911.org/showthread.php?t=39001 . I thought it a little more appropriate for the Colt forum. To sum up it is a discussion of a LW Commander with some question of the serial number. Specifically, should the serial number have been "CLW002xxxx" or, as the poster wrote, "CLW02xxxx"? The serial number list at proofhouse.com uses two zeros.

I saw a LW Commander a couple of weeks back that was CLW0166xxx.

A closer look at the proofhouse list shows that the 1971 LW Commanders have two zeros after CLW and a total of six digits (CLW009751), but in 1972, it has two zeros and a total of seven digits (CLW0016901). I think it's just a typo somewhere and that the list should have one zero after 1972. Does anyone have a pistol with seven numbers?

I probably would have left it alone, but a few seemed certain the original poster was wrong, and I have way too much free time. And, for the record, proofhouse is a good site with lots of info!

Hopefully someone can help out with this question; a lot of forum members have the gun in question.

I had a Light Weight Commander I sold in 1988 the serial number was CLW00XXXX it was manufactured between 1970 and 1983. The Light Weight Commander I purchased the other day has a serial number xxxxx-LW it was manufactured between 1950 and 1976. I could not find how many were produced during those time frames. You can call Colt and they would be happy to answer your questions. Have a nice day.
