I can stop at any time, But I must first admit that I have a problem with wanting Colt 1911s,,,
It all started a little over a year ago with the stunning purchase of a Colt Officers MKIV series 80 Bright polish enhanced with ivory grips, Then it was a government that was the perfect match, Then, well as you may have guessed, It turned into several more Colts, and I find myself driving out of my way just to swing into a gun shop that I heard of,
I dont want to stop,,, When is enough?
Is it when the ssafe is full?
Or do you just get another safe?
My name is Peter, And I am A Coltahoic.

My addiction was passed down from my father. I can remember when we would go to our property and shoot. He would bring all sorts of stuff but there was just something about that Government 45 acp that just hooked me. I think he did it on purpose. I sure don't mind. We still have alot of fun with that thing. When my daughter sees me cleaning my 1911's she asks me when can she have a pink princess Colt gun. I plan on passing the addiction to her and the son my wife is due to deliver in March. It is kindof funny...when I go shooting with my dad I feel like I am 8 years old again. I am 33 now. It is truly awwesome!

There is a romance about the Colt Government Model that no other has. I believe it stems from the history of the company and the pride of a hand built pistol by old world craftsmen.
I too have the Colt fever and have not been able to shake it (nor would I want to). I realized it a number of years ago when paying for one Colt and planning for my next one.

I certainly have 1911itis and Colt is the specific variant I have been infected with. By the time I was about 8 I had shot revolvers in .22 and .38 and a Ruger MkI in .22. Of course the Ruger is a blowback action and has the bolt that comes back and the slide and grip stay where they are, so I had a little experience with autos.
Also when I was 8, I had shot a .357 Mag and the recoil for a kid was not fun. (Now that I have grown up I have lots of .357Mag, 44Mag, etc). Back to when I was 8 after the .357 I shot my first 1911 I was amazed at the lack of recoil and told my father, "The gun seems to take itself apart and then put itself together on each shot.
I guess I got infected right then.

I went to two yesterday, and one today :D :D :D!!!!
I have a full-blown case of 1911-itis, subvariant, Coltitis! I hate to tell you this my friends but we're all doomed :scared:! There is no end in sight.... I've begun dreaming about pre-series 70 9mm Commanders!!!
Along the lines of what Hunter said, i am planning my next purchase while i'm waiting for the NICS report on my current one ;).
...First i'll need a pre-series 80 Combat, and LW, Commander in .45 and 9mm...and maybe 38 Super, then i want a "shooter" A1, and then i'll look for an "original" m1911....And just when i thought it couldn't get any worse, i've discovered a love for High Powers (FN's and i even want an FM Detective!)!...and Winchester "lever's"!...and maybe a CZ or two!...and Smith J-Frames (and a TRS)....and Ruger .44mags. ..And did i mention AR's :D? Baers? Nighthawks? Custom 1911's?
I'm out of control....:scared: ;)

It's not a sickness it's a life style. Some people love cars and etc. Myself I choose to collect and enjoy Colt's. If it's a perceived sickness oh well. There are alot more things in life that could be worse. I'm sure we all could list plenty of worse things......I wouldn't worry about it enjoy your Colt's. I own over 50+ including rifles , revolvers and 1911's..... :)

It's not a sickness, it's a fun disease.............the kind you enjoy having. Might as well enjoy having it, you won't have any money though so be fore warned.
I have more Colt's than I'll admit to and will probably buy more in the not too distant future. Old ones new ones different ones, anything that says Colt on it is fair game!

I dont know if it's an Indiana thing, But I am In PA,,, I have a few colt revolvers as well, But these dang 1911s will be the death of my wallet, It seems as though I go into a shop where I havent been for a couple of months, And there will be a series 70 or 80 Just sitting there with a lost puppy look about it, and it's priced right, And it will follow me home, The last one was a week ago, A mint gold cup national match in the box, series 80 and a deep blue luster in the likes which I had never seen before, It came home with me, Got a break down, and a relube job, And a new recoil spring, It has the most buttery feel of any 1911 I have, And a 3 lb trigger,,,,,,,
It is a good thing I work long days------I dont get to go to shops until the weekend,,, If it werent for my job I would be searching far and wide for the new bargin
They are all "investments" I keep telling myself, They surely will be more reliable than the stock market?!!!!!!!!!

You and me both ;). Sounds like a really nice Gold Cup! That's on my to-do list eventually. Boy oh boy, just the sound of it..."deep blue luster"..."buttery" action...there's just something about a Colt!
I do have to agree with the other posts though. We may joke about the "addiction" aspect of it, but there are PLENTY of worse things we could be doing with our time. Collecting Colts brings me great joy (and i'm new to this!)!
Where in PA are you? I grew up in Williamsport.

Does anyone’s ‘sickness’ so bad as to not be interested in other 1911s? Intellectually I understand SA, S&W, DW, etc make fine 1911s – but if it isn’t a Colt, I don’t want it. Yes, the P7 is really cool but for the price of the P7 – or a tad less - I can have a Colt.
Oh, well… :o

Yep! I agree with the fellow who has a signature that state "if it's not a Colt it's a clone!"
I am not saying there are not other brands of 1911's that are excellent pistols but for me personally "if it's not a Colt it's a clone!"
There are a multitude of Custom 1911's that are outstanding pistols but it boils down to one's personal preference and mine is Colt!
I think everyone here is kidding about it being a sickness when we really mean it is a life long love affair with a classic pistol.

Get the WW1 repro. It's super neet 1911 and extremely well made. Also soon to become unobtainium while the series 70 will remain in production longer.

That's a lot of commute-time if you ask me Lynnie. Maybe it's worth it... Is it a good job-offer? It'd take a heck of a job to get me to drive more than 30 mins. to work. If any of my guns earn their wear it's okay with me, a lot of the guns I buy to use, if that means a little wear then so be it. My carry gun (S&W 340PD) is starting to show a good bit of wear and I didn't even notice until my father pointed it out to me.

Good point, Joni......it's not for carry, elij....I just haven't bought a 1911 since I received my PII from Les sometime late last year, and I'm ready for another Colt to keep the others company. My Department won't let me carry anything but Sigs, Barettas, and Glocks on duty....or a Walther PPK off duty if I'm desperate. So....carrying my TRS or old Commander Lightweight is breaking the rules...now I wouldn't do that, would I? lol

I've occasionally carried my Sig 239 but prefer the S&W 340PD. I can't carry at work or while on the property so most of the time I'm without either of them.

Elij, I think there is a hesitancy on the part of many departments because of a reluctance to spend enough training money to insure proficiency with what is perceived as a "difficult weapon to manipulate" for many current recruits who have never fired a gun of any kind before they join the academy. I know..I know...
Also, departments are so attuned to "political correctness" that they are concerned that the the Condition One carry might be "offensive" to the citizens.

I'm not sure how many people out there realize what cocked and locked is or looks like now. I think that a series 80 Colt cocked and locked is at least as safe as a Glock, if not more so. The anti gun culture has been so effective at making sure that as many people as possible know nothing about guns except that they are "dangerous". A very large percentage of new police recruits in these areas have never even handled a firearm before they got on the job. I never owned a pistol until I was 25 and that was purchased because I had a part time job as an armed security officer and I needed it for work.
elijdub
7th November 2007, 21:18
Well thanks for the clarification, gents, as to why dept's act that way... It's just silly, the whole "condition 1 being dangerous" thing (as we all know).
..And i can't believe there are new recruits that have never fired a gun before! I'm sure they go through proper training and all... I'm just surprised cuz so many of my friends that are LEO's, of one sort or another, began handling guns loooong before they could drive a car ;)! I owned my first gun at 9...a .22 (of course ;)). I hunted for the first time at 12 (legal age in PA) with a .243, and bought my first pistol at 26 (after a several year lapse in gun interest).
Joni Lynn
7th November 2007, 21:22
I'll never understand why Glocks are considered safe and 1911's aren't. All it takes to fire a Glock is for anything to pull the trigger. (remember hearing the story of the guy that had a maglite in his pocket along with his Glock and now sports a black tupperware scar on his leg?)

I have heard one of the problems with our favorite pistol is the fact that you have to swipe off the thumb safety in order to fire it. With practice, one does that naturally.
Trust me, many new police recruits first experience with a firearm is the police academy. Many of these big cities have large police departments, but they also have handgun bans for the people that live there. If you live in Chicago, it's been almost 20 years now since they banned ownership of handguns for people other than LEO and Armed Security. Chicago used to be such a rough and tumble place, I'm not sure when the twits took it over, but they have. :(

WOW! No handguns in the city....! That's incredible. I've never heard of such a thing...seriously...an actual ban on guns. Please forgive my shock. I just had no idea. I mean, what do you do if you work in a bank, or a liquor store, or are just a citizen who wants to protect themselves?
It does make sense though why there are so many recruits who've never fired a gun.

We are gun-friendly here...new State law says anyone who is not otherwise prohibited from owning a gun (Convicted Felon, member of a criminal street gang, etc) may keep a pistol in their vehicle as long as it is concealed....that's even without a CHL...I'm all for it..I have no fear of the honest person with a gun.
