Would you please recommend a thread or location on this site to learn how to remove my front and rear sights from my officer's model? Thanks much.

Hi

Unless it's an unusual pistol, removal is fairly easy.

The front sight is held on by a "tenon" that stakes it to the slide. You grind off the inside the slide part of the tenon and the front sight comes off.

The rear sight is held on with a dovetail arrangement. You pound on it with a hammer an punch. That drives it sideways out of the slide.

Putting sights back on again is the hard part.

I think you drive the rear sight out from left to right and reinstall right to left.
PA Guns is correct on all counts, the front must have the staked tenon ground away.

Brownells has a tool that helps putting in the new front site. I have found the rear site may take patience and a nice set of files, with patience being more important. Brass or Nylon punches for the rear site. Save the old one in case someone wants it someday.

I utilize an odd way of removing and installing sights......

I go to my friendly gunsmith who uses a padded vice and press to nicely slide the rear sight off......no pounding and using punches!! :D

He guarantees the front staking......it it comes loose, he fixes it.

Oh, and the last time he did that for me........it was 12 bucks to remove the rear and install the Yo-Bo retro.
