View Full Version : Trigger pull on 1991s?

Hi,
I keep reading that the addition of the firing pin safety/block adds weight to the trigger pull on the 1991 government model. Specifically we're talking about the 01991, here, ok?
Then I read, "Nah, not really."
All pistols must be looked at individualy of course, but in general, does the added firing pin safety/block add weight on these or not?
And if it does, is it significant?
Thanks,
Mike

I currently own three Colt Commander models with the Series 80 firing pin safety. My blue Model 04691 and my stainless Model 04091U both have trigger pulls in the 4 pound range. This is perfectly satisfactory for range and concealed carry use. My stainless XSE Lightweight Commander's trigger goes off at a little over 5 pounds.
Most of the folks I know who own such Series 80 equipped pistols have no problems with their trigger pulls.

I have a Series 80 with the firing pin safety. Over a period of a couple years I have removed the parts and inserted a blank, and then later put the parts back in. During these changes I have measured the trigger pull and found the difference to be small but measurable - 5 oz in an otherwise 4 pound pull. That is 4 with them out and 4.3 with them in. I consider that insignificant and have left them in. I've never had any difficulty with them and simply add a small "dowel down the barrel" as an additional function check after a detail strip and reassembly. Clearly these parts should be kept clean and lubed just as the sear, disconnector, and hammer hooks for a nice trigger.

As you say, no one can speak for all Series 80 pistols, with respect to trigger pull. My five-inch 1991 and Mk IV Lightweight Officers Model both have clean pulls in the low four-pound range, which is ideal for my intended use for each. I also bought a blank (from Brownells), to see if the absence of the Series 80 parts would produce a substantial difference in my Series 80 1911s. It didn't. I put the original parts back in, and I clean and lube them like any other internals in any of my 1911s. Others might have had different experiences.

Does the safety add pull weight? Probably.
Is it significant? Nope.
I own a couple of Para-Ordnance pistols with that system, as well as an M1991A1 Colt Compact. The Paras were around 5 pounds out of the box and I had no trouble getting them down to the 4 to 4-1/2 that I like by simple polishing. Ditto the Colt ... it was around 6 pounds when I bought it (used). I did replace the nylon trigger with a 3-hole aluminum trigger, but that was because I preferred to see a 3-hole aluminum trigger. I already had the gun down to 4-1/2 pounds just by polishing the sear and hammer hooks, and tweaking the sear spring.

I have two Colt Commanders (one pre-series 80, one series 80). Trigger jobs on both with pull set to 4.5# and I cannot tell the difference (the series 80 internal safety bits are in place).

When I purchased a used ORM Colt Commander a couple years ago, it had some modifications (mainspring housing, trigger, hammer) and I did not know who did the work so I gave it to a gunsmith to give it the once over and change the hammer back to the original round style.
While inspecting the pistol he discovered the Series 80 parts had been removed and told me he was required to replace them due to liability reasons. I went with it but was concerned what it would do to the trigger pull, since I'd heard about the heavy triggers the Series 80 system creates.
The good news is I could tell no difference in the before and after trigger pulls. So as far as the Series 80 heavy trigger stories go, I'd say they are way overblown.
