I just acquired a worn, but interesting 1911 that has had some 1911A1 parts added. It is serial numbered 6199XX, and has the "United States Property" above the serial on the right side ofthe frame, rear of the slide stop. It has had the 1911A1 grip safety, arched & checkered mainspring housing, G.I. WWII short checkered trigger, and later narrow and checkered hammer added. It is definitely a 1911 frame, and all other parts (safety, slidestop, etc) appear to be correct for a 1911. The other unusual thing is that the Colt slide is not marked on the right side at all, but has the usual rollmarks w/patent dates on the left side. Only one proof mark above the mag catch on the left side of the frame. All original finish, and the slide SEEMS to match the rest of the gun in wear and discoloration. Can anyone tell me if the slide is correct, without "model of 1911" etc rolled on the right (did they omit this in later G.I. contracts?), or possibly is this a transitional (or ordnance rework "to 1911A1 specs) by the military, modifying existing 1911's to 1911A1 for the troops? Any production year info or other info appreciated.
