I have been thinking of getting the front strap of my DW Pointman 7 checkered. Does Dan Wesson do this custom work?I know that others do. Ny real question is. Do I need to send my frame through a FFL? or could I send my frame direct?

if its going to a gunsmith or home to the factory you can send it your self .. not sure if DW will do the checkering or not

stratmanchaz where are you located? Marianne Carniak in MI does some killer 1911 work. I've not heard that DW does any work like that...then again I haven't heard that they don't either.

Hmm, does it make a difference whether you ship just the frame or the whole gun?

frame is the part that matters as its considered the gun since it has the Serial #

I was just wondering if it was any different because it wasn't an entire gun.

nope they consider the frame the gun now if you ship just the slide and barrel thats different but frame is the gun

A little thread revival. I was interested to know if you selected someone to do your frontstrap checkering. I did some checking with Dan Wesson myself and they referred me to Dave Severns of Severns Custom.
I haven't looked around real hard, Of course I want it to look and feel like it was meant to be that way but I'd like to get a fair price too.
I'm not trying to say Daves' price isn't fair, I haven't gotten quotes from anyone else yet but I think it is wise to shop around first.

Interesting, since Dave used to work for DW, that they would still refer him. I guess there was no animosity when he left and started Fusion. But have you seen the Fusion Firearms long slide 10mm yet? I want one so bad.

I have not had the front strap done yet. There has been no time with the Holidays. After the new year I will contact Dave to see if he does it. I just don't want to have to pay a dealer to ship it.

He does do FCS checkering and will give you a specific quote for that and whatever else you need from mild to wild. I haven't done any business with him yet but he has been a great source of information thus far. My RZ is very likely going to him, I just need to wait until the planets align...

Don't be discouraged if a reply takes awhile. I was shocked to hear just how many emails he gets and he doesn't always hear the phone with running a machine, let alone run for it when he does hear it at a critical moment on a customers' project.
Here is a link to an interesting thread series detailing one special forum involvement project:

Don't get the wrong idea that he is unobtainable or something like that, he quoted me some very reasonable prices for a variety of work leaving several options open to my determination. He also made it pretty clear he doesn't need to advertise for work.
